High end...passive...old school....simple...but not a P Bass....

Old school & passive, with a high quality build, but heavy as a truck, Peavey T-40. I modified mine and changed the Phase switch to a single coil/humbucker tap switch. Now the tone knobs function as they should and the tone can vary from Jazz like with 2 singles to more of an aggressive dual humbucker Warwick like tone

Any thoughts on how the Shorthorn might work as a fretless? Jerry Jones seems to think he could make a lined fretless for me. I'm currently looking for a short-scale fretless, preferably passive. The only other possibilities I know of besides the SX are the Birdsong Corto Bass and the Eden by James Basses. Are there others? The Jerry Jones instruments are certainly at a good price point!
If you like that style of instrument, Jerry Jones is definitly the way to go.

HA! I saw this thread title and was all ready to post a link to Rob's site. I am totally infatuated w/ this bass.
You might find something you like at basslabusa -- see their "soul" line, which has a passive switch, and looks pretty old school. Some are semi-hollow, 5 lbs!
These are actually true hollowbodies, but the tops are not thin enough to resonate like a spruce top. They are much louder unplugged than a slab-I should be receiving a Soul V in about a month.......

I would love to have a Marleaux Votan myself...I'm sure they'd do a passive one. Great looking bass.

Nicky, you may want to think about just finding a great playing Fender P and having the pickup switched out for a Darkstar or, for a little more modern sound, one of the new oval Delano pickups.
Of all the ones pictured, I vote for the orignal posters Rob Allen. That's just a gorgeous, understated bass.
