High fret

Hi all: I’ve acquired a Hofner travel bass and the11th fret on the D str is high. A machinist rule will rock if centered on that fret. This causes the string to buzz when the 10th note is fretted. Set up is good except for that, no issues anywhere else on the fret board. Should I try to tap down the fret or simply file it down. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I would first try tapping it down, go easy with rubber hammer.

Yes, check whether the fret has lifted below the string that is buzzing but be prepared to file and recrown it. When applying the hammer support the neck below.

Thank you both, RattleSnack and basshack. I carefully checked both ends of the fret and could detect no sign of lifting, no cracks or other distress visible. I was able to loosen the strings enough to use a fine, narrow file and being careful not to touch the fretboard dress down the high spot. It was very small but was directly under the string. I lightly filed the fret and then checked the height with the machinists rule against the neighboring frets. It took 3 tries but now is flat and true. As far as I can tell , the top profile is still rounded but the string buzz is gone; thanks again. Enjoy the day!
