High Pass Filter (HPF) and Low Pass Filter (LPF) Mega Thread

Agree with the edit. I don't see a problem with someone sending a High-passed signal to the board. It would take quite a high setting to mess up a FOH mix. If someone sets it that high, chances are they are using it as more of an effect than a utility at that point. It could also be in error and provides a good learning experience for them.

Right - my only reserve is the possibility of it getting switched after the PA is dialed in - that could cause some real problems... Other than that, it's all good...

Thinking back to the HPF feature being included in amps, I think when you are spending a large chunk of money on "professional" level amps, that is where expectations may begin to creep in. It's good to know that at least one big player in the amp business is including that. I believe it does show that they are looking out for more than just profit. I don't expect a variable HPF on an BA-108(or similar from any brand), but an Ampeg Heritage SVT-CL(again, or similar from any brand) is very different. Obviously demand is playing it's part and they are focused on what they know those players want. I guess it's just one of those things that makes me go, "Hmm."

I'd just like to add that, while I'm not experienced in circuit design in any way, from reading on the topic I know that even the most basic tube preamp circuits have high pass filtering built into the circuit by design, and have had for decades. It's part of "good design practice" and helps to eliminate a myriad of potential issues in the circuit.

If you ask me, there is absolutely no reason to try and pass 20 Hz signal content in a musical instrument amplifier. In any industry, optimizing a design is all about making compromises, and in the case of musical instrument amps, chopping off inaudible signal content that requires gobs of power to amplify into cabs that can't reproduce that content anyway... seems like a no brainer.

Getting back to the marketing aspect of it, I don't think there's a need to market it as a "feature" of the amp, because it's almost a necessity as part of the circuit optimization during design. But if you tell most bass players that you're intentionally chopping off the lowest part of their signal, you can bet that will raise a horrendous stink and turn a lot of people off, simply because the understanding of why you're doing it isn't there.

I think I read somewhere that the output transformer plays a role in frequency response, and how low an amp will extend to, I just am not sure how that relates to bass guitar amps. I assume most production amp have what they need in order to go down to low 30's or 20's, but I have nothing to base that on.

I do know that before I knew any better, whenever something related to audio was rated as 20Hz-20KHz, that is what I needed because I need to hear to the limits of the human ear...

So because lots of players don't currently have an understanding of how an HPF can benefit, the manufacturers should just not mention it? That's a rather pessimistic view. What if the manufacturers include an explanatory paragraph about their HPF, explaining how it keeps the amplifier from wasting power on subsonics, which makes more power (loudness) available for everything above it, and also keeps their (maybe expensive) cabinets from blowing up? Any bass player should be able to understand and appreciate that, especially if (like most of us) they pay for their own gear with their own hard-earned dollars.

I have days when the human race seems like a basket full of wet noodles, but color me optimistic today - if you give the people enough information about what's included and why, they just might be able to expand their understanding and appreciation a bit.

Basically right now, I EQ out some low end on my DI just before it goes to the amp if I plan on playing loud. As I understand it I would lose more sub rumble and keep more tone if I used a dedicated HPF instead of rolling the EQ.

IME/IMO, yes - using a variable HPF to control rumble rather than EQing it out will allow you to retain more of your tone... However, that may or may not happen before your send to the board and/or amp - and can be approached in several different manners... I have had good luck using a HPF before both my amp and my DI send - but that's not the only valid approach to this...

For example, some people High Pass in their effects loop, and also at the board - it just depends on what you're trying to accomplish, and your available options to get there...

Implementation is definitely situational. However you set it up, have it done before everything is set on the board. While they shouldn’t have a problem making needed adjustments, it won’t be appreciated.
 
So I just looked at my speaker's specs (Eden 410 XLT), and the frequency response is 50Hz-14KHz.

After reading this thread, I would try setting my variable HPF (which I do not yet own) at around 50Hz, and then "follow my ear" from there?

Also, should I assume that an amp with a fixed 30Hz cutoff HPF would not be the ideal match?

You could even start in the 40’s and work your way up from there. Start at a low or medium volume(just to save your ears) then when you find what you like, turn up the volume and see if you still like it.

After reading a lot of about HPF/LPF, and listening to my sound, came to a conclussion that HPF (or both in one pedal) would be great for my applications.

I see mostly positive reviews for 3 products - Broughton HPF/LPF, Fdeck and Omni Cabsim (not HPF by itself, but would give me added benefits).
The problem is - all of these pedals are made in USA and could only find a dealer in Europe for Omnicab sim (which has none in stock, and no date for restock). I am not to keen ordering from USA, paying significant amount on shipping and then getting duties/taxes applied as well (21% from value+shipping in my country).

Any good HPF products that are made/distributed in Europe? Or mentioned products are top of the line and I should just save up some extra money for shipping , D/T?

OmniCabSim is made in Chile. Micro Thumpinator comes from the UK I think. Broughton comes from Canada.
