High Pass Filter (HPF) and Low Pass Filter (LPF) Mega Thread

Anyone notice that after dialing in the sweet spot with the HPF (Broughton always on version in my case), the strings sound brighter ?

My Rotosound 77 flats get quite a bit brighter. A bit too bright for my taste.

Not a big deal because I was thinking of going back to TI Flats anhow. Even before I got the HPF.

Me too. To me, it evens out all the strings by reducing the super lows that add mostly distortion.

Think of it this way, you're removing lows so the highs have less competition. The highs end up sounding louder because they end up occupying more of the frequency spectrum by proportion.

I usually notice it more in the midrange when I have my HPF dialed up too high.

For the past month or so I have been using a Beta version of the (Audio Sprockets) ToneDexter (pedal) software for (my upright) Bass that has a HPF on the 12 back to 6 part of the dial.

Andy said it was set at 120 at the max end and I generally had it maxed out when I was using it.

For the version that will come out as the new update he is going to increase the range to 180 which I think will be a great improvement.

Having an HPF on the TD is an excellent addition.

At least on my (upright) bass there can be a lot of mic resonance (depending on the speaker placement) so the HPF works to counter that. THese cats keep tuning the device to get better and better.

Today I sold my fdeck HPF-3 and ordered a Broughton LPF+HPF pedal - definitely looking forward to using that... I wasn't dissatisfied in the least the the fdeck - it made a huge difference for the better - I'm just thinking the additional LPF will come in handy, and that I'll like the control layout on the Broughton better...

Makes sense.

I have the Radial Dragster and I could dial it back a bit to tame the highs, but what that was doing was putting more of a load on my pickup which is defeating the purpose of why I got it start with.

I just realized a few minutes ago that I had my horn turned on on my cabinet. A few days ago a friend of mine was over here checking the cabinet out and wanted to hear it with the horn on.

I'll fire it up here in a little bit with the horn off. Should tame the highs a bit.

I found a cool use for an HPF that I thought I would pass along.

For those who are not familiar with the HPF3, it is a variable high-pass filter with a volume control. It is produced by talkbass member @fdeck.

I have an effects board with all the effects in a parallel loop, a One Control Mosquite Blender Expressio.

I was having a problem balancing the output level of the effected sound with the dry sound.

When searching in my pile of 'stuff' for a small volume pedal, I came across my HPF3. I put that last in the effects chain, just before the return of the blender. Now I can balance the volume of the wet and dry sound.

The best part is that I can use the high pass filter on the wet signal to eliminate the rumble from some effects. I am very happy with the result.

The Crown is Class D. 8.6 lb (3.9 kg) 1100w Bridged Mono @ 4 ohms. 350w per channel @ 4 ohms.

I use the ART EQ primarily for the adjustable HPF and LPFs, and sometimes to EQ out any acoustic issues in the room.

The other benefit of the ART is that by inserting it between the GED and the Crown, the GED's 1/4" unbalanced output is converted by the ART to a balanced output, which the Crown seems to prefer.
 
VFE makes this HPF/LPF DRAGON pedal, besides the PINBALL pedal mentioned by Bassbeater...

Presumably if the HPF makes the strings seem brighter, you can turn the highs down, boost volume, and be ok
