High Pass Filter (HPF) and Low Pass Filter (LPF) Mega Thread

My original plan was to go direct with my PF-50T to guide the drummer then replace them with a mic'ed B-15 + REDDI once we get the drums down. But now I'm not so sure. I've got such a great sound going direct that I may just keep what I did,

Had a similar scenario recently in the recording studio! The Broughton HPF+LPF showed up in time for me to get it onto the pedal board for the studio session. Recorded the PF50T direct and with a mic on the cab. The sounds were so similar between the two it was remarkable. Being able to focus the tone from the top and bottom really helps the bass sit in that mix much better.

The best part, is that the bass sounds good on any type of speaker. Big Hi-Fi systems obviously are the best, but you can still pick it out on the cell phone speaker!

I find my HPF allows me to better use the tone controls on my amp which gets me a better tone at a lower position on my volume control. Without my HPF I tend to broadly cut and lose a lot of the "meat" to the tone. I played around with HPF and always have one on my computer input. It wasn't until I did a gig in a bad room that i truly came to appreciate how valuable the little pedal can be. I can't imagine playing out without a HPF.
Exactly.

If you ever fine yourself without you can always pluck closer to the bridge but it's not the same!

This thread...
Favorite pedal to push the low end

... Has me thinking of how the various pedals mentioned in that thread would work with a HPF before one of them.

Specifically, would a HPF present a signal to whatever bass boost of choice that would result in better note definition then using one of those pedals without it ?

The MXR Micro Amp+ and the EHX Mole mentioned have me curious.

Yesterday i received my Broughton Always On HPF. The mailguy showed up 10 minutes before i had to leave for a gig so i was able to take it with me right away.

The gig was in a small pub with all wooden floors, walls and wooden everything,
so kind of the perfect place to give the HPF a little test run. Man, was i pleasantly suprised! Normally these kind of rooms would give me a total low-end boomy migraine, especially with my 63 Pbass with Labella Flats. But not tonight!! Wow, i totally get the magic now. I needed to cut as high as 60hz (i'm guessing) and my bass sounded amazing through my Ampeg Micro VR +210. I think i saw another TB'er describe the sound as 'powerful' and that was exactly how i would describe the tone. Thanks everyone for talking me into this!!!!

I tried mine at a gig at the weekend using my Mesa Walkabout head but because the backline cab wasn't any good really i doubt there was much it could have done. It was a large venue gig with pro FOH and stage monitoring. I guess if it is giving the sound guy a decent FOH sound then that's enough. Next time I will try it at a smaller venue with a backline only setup so I can hear it directly.... or not.

hmm, I guess (it would save you a block) BUT... from what ive read (haven't tried myself) the global setting dont affect everything (Like using a send).

IIRC, "Global" also affects any return line/Aux in. like listening/practicing to music or FOH mix. So depending on your usage/routing, a global HPF could/might be a workable option (for global LPF probably not so much) *I cant remember if the "global" eq settings are pre or post in the chain. I think they're pre on the Main in, something to think about.

Sorry for the vagaries, but between TB and L6 forums theres alot of info out there to absorb :) Im curious to hear from pedal only HPF users on this topic.

edit: yes, no sends or USB interface (HXS Manu Pg 39), so as an interface for your DAW global isn't gonna help (but you can use a plugin). So again depends on how you'll utilize/route the HX...

but to "save a block" seems the Global HPF might be the way to go?

If this has been gone over before, please let me know, but I think it would be helpful if a list of bass amps that already have a built in HPF could be added to this thread. I know the Genz Benz Shuttle series of amps have them ( set in the 30-35 hz, iirc ), and I've been told that the Genzler amps have them along with the new Subway amps. Adding an outboard HPF to an amp that already has one may add something called a " cascading " effect, according to Agedhorse, depending on the order of both HPF's. I'm not technically inclined enough to understand this, but I did try an Fdeck HPF with my Shuttle amps just for the heck of it and the results were not as expected, namely it had no effect at all, or, turning the Freq knob up, sucked all the bottom out of the amp. Don't get me wrong, I'm not putting down HPF's at all; I think they are very useful tools, but if you already have a built in one, an outboard one may not be needed at all, or may have to be used in a different manner, according to the two different orders of the HPF's.

I think there WAS a list (if not here in another related thread) of amp heads with HFP.

well yes, the HPF could be in front of your chain or used on the amp head. HPF application would depend on... application. do you want to tame your input of certain FX? do you want to tame the signal entering the amp stage? are you using the HPF to tame a room in live sound? I think each instance would require a different application. Using a Helix Stomp, I had to think twice about mistakenly having multiple HPF filters across multiple blocks in my signal chain. The HXS gives you way too many options to place H/LPFs ;)

No currently Global EQ is flat. its certainly an interesting proposition, I haven't tried it—just for a lack of need and/or time to mess with it. (we should probably take this Global HPF idea over to the HXS thread)

But in a way, this Global HPF goes to the idea of "placement"/Application. I might use global to HPF everything with an ABG or DB where the signal chain has minimal processing. but with FX on BG (mod/filter/distortion) I may not want a Global HPF so that it can go anywhere in th chain.
