High School Tips?

I LOVE highschool. If you're anything like me, you'll have a great time. DON'T procrastinate- work piles up fast. You'll meet tons of new people, make new friendships, and find out more about who YOU really are. A major part of how your high school experience will be is how confident you are with yourself. Can you walk down the halls alone, amidst tons and tons of people you don't know, but still feel like you own them all? Don't worry, growing up and getting more real life experience will get you there. Also, remember to flirt with as many girls as possible- high school is a great place. You'll meet tons and tons of new girls.
But above all (as was stated already), remember to be yourself.

Study hard, dont procrastinate, and try new things. Sign up for stuff, dance, ect. Get involved.

Dont fall into drugs and drinking, no matter how many people are doing it or how good it seems at the time.

Girls...

You dont pick them, they pick you.

If you hate high school dont worry. It goes fast and College is where the real game begins.

Don't get behind in your work, and don't get a rep for being a hassle to teachers/admins. They can make your life worse than any bully if you get off on the wrong foot. Voice of experience, both my own and my son's.

As far as popularity and roles and social groups, remember this...

Be true to who you are. All the clique stuff is superficial, in the long run. When you go to your ten-year reunion, you'll see why. Everyone will change. People who were sooooo cool at 17 will often be sooooo not when they're nearly 30. People who were mean will have had some knocks in life and be more open-minded and humbled...kinder. It all comes out in the wash.

It all changes after high school. So, during it, just have fun with people who like you for who you are, and not what they can make you into, and pursue the things that you love and see yourself doing when you're grown. Now's the time for it. All the other stuff is really not going to be a big deal, later on.

Cherie :)

I'm only just finishing HS(or our equivalent of it here) in a few days, amn when I read over this thread I get some good and bad memories...
Don't take any BS, but at the same time, pick your battles, some people are just looking to wind you up.

It may have been said countless times but saying it won't make it any easier for you, be yourself. It was something I just couldn't do until a few years ago, I was always trying to make friends with everyone and be cool and fit in with everyone, but as soon as I stopped trying, it all came(not to sound like a douche either though). Having said all this, the mantality of the people you'll be in school with will dictate a lot of things you do. Being yourself is tough when you are your age('cos I'm just so old:smug:).

Get involved with as many things as you can. Why...? Because life is sweet goddammit and it's too short to be wasting it not doing stuff!:D

Flirt with ALL the girls... it's just so much fun! :D(Although nothing terrified me more than flirting with girls when I was your age!)

Don't do anything too stupid. HS is a time for dumb mindless things, but if it's just too stupid, don't do it.

Don't let your grades slip, I'm paying the price for doing so at the moment. Final exams are one of the most important thigns you'll ever do and dictate so much. How I wish I studied:rolleyes:

And most importantly, friends...
You'll find friends in highschool that will become closer to you than your family.(Well, I did anyway) These will be the people who stick by you through think and thin and you'll do the same for them. Even if I fail all my exams, I know I've come out with some of the best friends I'll ever have and will probably still be best friends with all of them 10 years down the line.
You'll inevitably be tempted to do things all your friends are doing, but if you don't want to... don't. It really is that simple, real friends won't stop being friends with yo for it.

Man I'm actually going to miss HS, I had such a good time in my senior years!:bawl:

Eh I'd hold off on experimentation until college. HS is pretty important. This is your once chance to make yourself look good on paper. Go in strong from the start.... and keep on going. Set goals for yourself and try your best to meet them. I totally changed who I was in HS from when I went in to when I came out. I really found myself in HS and it was great. It's your chance to blossom so to speak. Find out what you love to do, and pursue it.

Then college comes around and you have a lot of time to screw around... so you can do that and still do well in classes. It's the greatest... but HS has it's own special perks that you'll never get to experience in life again, so make the best of it.

I hated high school and my grades were always s**t.

But, then again, I knew going to college wouldn't be for me from the start. So don't take my advice. Then again I didn't give any either. Meh.

alright, before you ever do something illegal or risky, MAKE SURE you have plan to get yourself out of a mess. Be sure to cover your tracks, and you'll get by unscathed.

#1 rule: ENJOY YOURSELF. Have fun

#2: be nice to everyone. Don't make enemies. If you're friendly towards everyone, everyone is friendly toward you, and you get invited to all sorts of parties and such.

#3: GET GOOD GRADES. No, ya don't have to be a straight A student, but secure yourself a seat in college. Ya don't wanna be workin' at Mickey D's for the rest of your life.

#4: you're obviously into music. Despite what people think, join one of the school bands. You meet alot of awesome people, take various road trips to other places, ect. It's oodles of fun.

#5: since you'll be a freshman, don't bring too much attention upon yourself from upper classmen. That'll get ya pounded really quick.

#6: start working out, for two reasons: 1: chicks dig it. 2: be able to hold up in fights.

#7: Don't be surprised by drugs and alcohol. They will be introduced to you very early on. I've experimented with them, but have never encountered any negative repercussions for it. If you think they will be ultimately detrimental to you, just say no.

#8: be prepared for alternate viewpoints on EVERYTHING. You will meet people of all different backgrounds and opinions, with drastically alternative views to your own. Always try to understand their viewpoint, and keep an open mind about things. If you feel your opinions slowly changing about something, don't fight it. Don't be in denial. Accept what you believe. I had a very difficult time with this: I grew up in a fanatically conservative environment, with extremely opinionated parents. I had always accepted what they said as irrefutable truth. Once I started maturing and my persuasions started changing, I was in denial about them, and thought I was an evil person because of it. Embrace change, don't be afraid to grow.

#9: open up to many different types of music. You'll hear alot of different bands, try to listen to as many as possible.

#10: Girls. There will be many of them. Don't be afraid to walk up and say "hey, I'm joe (or whatever your name is), wanna hang out?" or something along those lines. Try and flirt with as many girls as possible.

#11: try and get a drivers license ASAP! they are invaluable to your social life.

#12: everybody likes a funny guy. If you are naturally funny, show it! Crack jokes, make friends. If you aren't, DO NOT try to be. Everybody notices when you try too hard to make people laugh, and it is EXTREMELY annoying.

This is a good point. It might sound dumb... But being able to talk to a variety of different people is an important skill. Most high school girls are not interested in the same subjects that nerds are... Unless we're talking nerdy-hot girls... Then send them my way. :D

Be yourself. Choose friends that are positive. As far as chicks go. Don't get wrapped up in the g/f b/f craziness. QUANTITY, not quality. You're not marrying any of these chicks, so just enjoy yourself and figure out the qualities you like in chicks for later in life. Also keep an open mind and learn as much as you can inside and outside of school while you have the shelter of your parents home. Tell your parents you love them often and you will see them grant you more freedoms. Don't try to battle the world, the system, or the man, they're all bigger than you and you will lose. Focus your time on improving yourself. If you want to stand up for something, identify the proper forums for it, and stand up properly. You're going to have good teachers. You're going to have bad teachers. Stay in touch with the good ones. Bite your lip and get through the bad ones. When you party, make sure you have a plan (that was created when your sober). Don't drive drunk. Teenagers are already bad drivers, don't bring alcohol into that. If your drunk, don't be afraid to call a cab, or a your parents for a ride. Don't ride with drunk buddies. Keep on top of your limits. Not everyone can drink as much as everyone else. Drugs affect everyone differently and they can even affect the same person differently at different times. If you want to experiment with them, save it for the time in your life AFTER you've gotten into college, which by the way is your MAIN focus for high school. Do all your work when it's assigned. Procrastination only leads to more stress and a bigger job. Take care of your body. Eat healthy. Exercise. Don't go through puberty and get fat from eating crap. If your fat now, start exercising now. You have a chance to reinvent yourself. Show up to school a better version of your former self. Also being positive and friendly always gets you farther than being emo, complicated, and moody. Especially with the chicks. Don't be afraid to have your own opinion different than someone else or everyone else. If you do have a different opinion learn to respect others and their opinion. Read the Man Laws. Many of them will come into play now. Good luck kid.

Wow. That post was amazing. I'm being serious Maki - that actually almost made a tear come to my eye! So much truth, and delivered in such a fashion - it is like you are the coach just before the big match!

Also, from reading this thread it sounds like American high schools are much more harsh and cliquey that English ones.

My tips:

1) Work hard. I didn't and I only just got away with it - I missed the minimum grades I needed to get into college by 1 mark (1 mark!), and ended up having to phone up and plead with them to let me in. The 5 hour wait that I had before they called me back was the worst 5 hours of my life. Seriously. Avoid it at all costs.

2) Play hard

2a) Girls - treat 'em mean, keep 'em keen. Tease them - they love it (not too much though - you don't want to make them cry). Don't become their ***** - if they have you running to the shops to get them a drink then something is wrong. Don't give up - I know Maki is always saying 'quantity not quality', but I chased my gf for 2 years before she finally gave in and said yes. I've been with her since then (3 years), and it has been amazing.

2b) Drink - The drinking age is lower over here, so I don't know whether attitudes are different. But we always had 1 or 2 people who would get completely and totally smashed at EVERY party. They were doing it for attention, and because they thought that it was cool.
And whilst we all thought that it was cool the first couple of times, and it was great fun telling the stories, it quickly became old. "Ha ha ha! Did you see James on Friday? He was WASTED! I heard he was sick 4 times and lost his jeans!" turned into "Oh god - did you see James on Friday? He was smashed as usual. I had to walk him home again, and he was sick on my shoes. I'm fed up of this". Also, it turned out that the people who were getting smashed all the time actually had some pretty bad confidence issues, and they were drinking to boost their confidence.
Be kind to drunk people, and look after drunk friends - one day, you will want them to look after you. Always make sure you have a plan for a party - someone to walk home with, someone to drive you home (sober), someone to pick you up, whatever. One of the worst things in the world is being quite drunk and not having a way to get home (or not being able to remember the way home).

2c) Drugs - I have managed to avoid drugs so far in my life. I would say try to do the same, but you might decide that you want to try. If you do, make sure you have clean friends who can tell you if you go too deep, and help to pull you out.

2d) Random stuff - Don't be afraid to do anything, although you should exercise some common sense here - there is some stuff that you shouldn't do, but I'll leave that up to you. I will give you some tips that come from my personal experiences to help you though:

- NEVER lock your knees when landing - bend them to absorb the shock
- The fumes from burning plastic are toxic
- Dance whenever possible - most people will think that you look stupid, but then the people who are worth something will also see that you have the self-confidence to look stupid and laugh about it at the same time
- If you are going to do shots of non-alcoholic substances, exercise caution. Soy sauce, Tabasco, vinegar and salt water are probably fine. Washing-up liquid could kill you. Ask someone who knows before you ingest anything that isn't normally ingested by itself/at all. Keep a bucket handy for the sick (this also applies if you will be ingesting ridiculous amounts of anything - milk comes to mind immediately).
- Say yes to anything and everything that looks like it could be advantageous in the future
- Wear a helmet when appropriate
- If there is more than a slim chance that you will be caught doing something illegal, don't do it
- If it looks like it will break/collapse then don't climb it
- Gaffer tape/duck tape is very useful. Always make sure you have a roll somewhere
- If anything is funny, or just cool, film/photograph it. That way you will have something to look back on in the future. There used to be an awesome video of me and my friends learning all the lessons above, which got accidentally taped over - I wish it was still in existence. I also don't have enough photos from when I was at high school.

Oh, and finally, save some money, and when you finish school, go on holiday with your friends. I went on one when I was 16, which was cool, but also one when I was 18, right at the end of school. I have some amazing memories of it, and luckily I also have some photos to prove it.

There's the saying " nothing ventured, nothing gained". Don't worry about rejection. Ask girls out, make conversation. Find something they're interested in and let them talk about it. Make positive comments to girls. It's easier to respond to positiveness. When you ask a girl to hang out, some will say yes, most will say no. Don't worry about it. It's a matter of numbers. Be positive with everyone and don't bad mouth others. It doesn't make you cool to belittle someone else. People do change some over time. Some people you will get along with as freshmen will not be hanging with you as a senior and vice-versa. Since you don't know who they will be, don't burn your bridges. That being said, don't be a push over.

There's some lines that I wish I had known in high school: (you can rephrase them however they work for you)
1) On what facts do you base your conclusion (observation)? Most people BS and expect you to go along with whatever they spew.
2) Freedom of speech works both ways. When someone tells what they think, it's okay for you to tell them what you think. If it's not okay with them, don't hang with them.
3) Some things are done well enough are okay. Some things that you choose to spend more time on and perfect are okay too.
4)

Eat protein.
Grow over 6 foot.
Work out.
Be nice.

People will respect you because they'll assume you can kick their ass, but if you're not nice someone'll end up challenging you, it's a tough balance :p

Oh and discipline yourself so that you can revise, I didn't and I think I've done alright, but I was lucky... (my mind wanders into making basslines during revision, no matter how quiet the room is :p )
Results ain't arrived so I just jinxed them though :(
Well.. that was my sophomore year (I think)

As for the extracurricular "fun," balance is key. I didn't fumble around with alcohol and other things until my senior year. I was much more focused on school and having sober fun with friends. I had friends that drank and did a lot more, but they were cool with me and I was cool with them. The key to anything is balance. If you do well in school, it will pay off. I'm going to a $45,000 a year school for virtually free. I had some hellish times in HS, but now it's worth it. I definitely had some great times too.

Don't do heroin. I had a few friends get addicted after a few tries, and it's not a pretty thing to be addicted to. Don't do coke, it'll make you into an *******. Don't do LSD (until a later stage in life, if you wish), your brain is developing and you're probably not psychologically mature enough to handle some aspects of it...

Respect your parents and their wishes... You owe a lot to them as long as you're living under their roof. If things are cool between you and them, life will be A LOT easier.

Don't get into drugs, alcohol, smoking. Once in a while is fine but once it becomes a habit it's nowhere but down. I've seen it happen to too many people.

Safe sex always. I've seen my share of pregnancies (and it gets worse)

Just don't get yourself ina hole academically. I did this. 9th grade i got 6 f's and 1 d minus. I'm serious. I only went to school so i could get some new high grade marijuana. or to meet some chicks. i started to care in 10th grade and floated, same with 11th. then 12th came and everyones getting accepted into college and i've got straight a's and it doesn't matter i can't graduate with my buddies... so i dropped out and started community college spring semester and started college early...

in the end it worked out for me.

but remember:

-don't get in a academic hole
-don't get arrested
-Wear the condom
-only smoke pot if you must, i will tell you everything else, even alchohol are just evil.
