hip hop bassists...

Definitely. There's a fine line - and sometimes not fine enough - between recognition of the sample and using the whole track. But you're right, that's another thread altogether

here you go.. There were alot of fun side discusions in here i wish could continue so i created a nice little downtime thread for general hip hop discussion with this discussion being the jump off.

I play that kind of stuff with a J. I play most stuff with a J.
Also my PJ works great for that. I think any good bass can do hip hop. Or usually everything else too.

But one thing that has really been worth it's weight in gold is a midi pickup. No more mocking with crappy synth pedals to get that late 90's synth grind or those classic super compressed sample sounds.

I've been playing in a hip-hop group for a little over 7 years. I've played everything from Fender Jazz to Precisions to Spector Rebops and Euros, Warwicks, MTDs, Stingrays and a NS Wav. My favorite tone was the Euro 4 w/ Deep Talking Rounds through a Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0 and a Neo 212 cab.

However, I'm about to enter the 6-string territory with a 'wick Corvette. I think you can play anything on a hip-hop track. It's more about the way you play, than what you play.
