Hofner-(not just Beatle Basses)-Group Part 2

Ok so for anyone that may be interested I tested out my idea about moving the neck pickup down a little and the bridge pickup up a little.

To do this I put my bass on my workbench to provide a flat surface ,loosened my strings completely, popped the pickups out of their surrounds, unscrewed the surrounds so that the pickups could be moved freely, popped the pickups back in and tuned back up.

Moving the bridge pickup up a half inch or so made a subtle but noticeable difference to the tone, the tone was a little thicker, the mids had a little more meat to them, a little less quacky sounding, moving the pickups more than the half inch was even more noticeable, unfortunately the hole for the pickup wire was drilled so close that I can only move the bridge pickup about 2 or 3 mm without exposing the hole so the above is a moot point.

I had more luck moving the neck pickup, I could easily move the pickup a half inch down, unfortunately though the neck pickup was not so responsive to being moved perhaps due to its very close to the neck position and moving the neck pickup down a half inch there was barely any audible difference, I was literally straining to hear a difference and any difference I perceived may have been the placebo effect.

Anyone used the Rotosound Trubass88 tapewounds on their Hofner? Any opinions on these? A musician at a jam night sold me a set for £10.00 as he brought the wrong scale length, for £10.00 I figure they have to be worth a try, I don't like the idea of having to file the nut to fit the strings but I figure with the zero fret this should be less problematic

Thanks for checking it out! I love the way the Hofner sounds. Wish I was a better engineer so that I could capture in the mix how it sounds directly into my mixer. It’s a great bass.

I’m not great with post-production either so I understand completely. Usually what I do is put a flat EQ with slightly boosted mids and some very light compression.

C'mon, man...the things are cheaper brand new than most new Squiers.

Besides, "wanted" posts are against forum rules outside of the classifieds and "Wanted" forums, which can only be posted to by supporting members, one of whom you apparently are not. Not to be a d*ck or anything, but you agreed to the rules when you signed up and we all are held to them.

Actually you do not have to be a supporting member to post in the Wanteds- they’re open to all members. If he had posted a brand new thread asking if anyone is selling one we would move it to the Wanted section, but a single post in a directly related club thread is fine.

OK, then my mistake...my apologies. I had read the rules recently concerning the issue of buying/selling here on TB and the way it was worded, I interpreted it to mean you had to be a supporting member to post in the wanted section. Can't test it myself because I'm already an SM.

I recent went on a big European tour and I took my CT 500/1 as a backup bass. A quarter way in I switched to the Hofner and WOW!! This bass slays! We play heavy, psychedelic rock, real fuzzed out and this bass handled the punishment well. It sits so well in the mix I never got lost behind the drums and guitar. It also handled a few songs in drop D which was real surprising for a short scale. A hofner bass strung up with Labella rounds running through a Sans Amp Bass Driver with the drive cranked is a dream tone!

I have a Sans Amp as well and will have to give that a try. I normally just run direct to house through the XLR output on my Walkabout head.
