I know what you mean, when I got mine about 15 yrs ago(?), I remember opening the case and the smell was great! The smell lasted years but is long gone now.

Hofner questions

I have one of the Contemporary series too and its a great little bass with a serious bottom end thud with a set of flats.
Personally I found the string spacing and short scale a little strange at first (my main bass is a Yamaha Attitude) but it's worth the effort adjusting to it.
I've seen quite a few Beatles tribute bands where the bassist has had a 'real' Hofner and imho mine sounds every bit as good.
The Contemporary series has the sound of a real Hofner at a third of the price. Saying that I'd love to be able to justify having a German made '62 reissue.

I have the Hofner Icon and am VERY happy with it! The look, feel, and SOUND with LaBella flats is pure Beatle bass heaven!
I know my 70's Hofner very well as it was my first bass and I still have it...I have to say that I tried a couple of Cavern reissues and the neck felt a bit thicker or clubbier than my 70s one.
