Hofner might not fit the metal "look" but I've played my buddy's 67 Hofner Viola bass and i was actually REALLY impressed with the OOOOMPH that came outta that sucker!

Sounded like a P bass with the tone cranked. Definitely would sound awesome with metal. Now if I could just get past that guitar-like string spacing...

Well if you do get that bass. Remove the mids completely. pump up the highs and lows. i miniscule amount of distortion. you should have the ultimate metal tone, regardless of what type of bass/look.

That's right, Cpt. Sensible did. And violin bass guitars are best played with a pick.
My objection (I own an Epiphone Viola Bass that is not same quality, but very similar) is the floating bridge. I found it technically possible to move or even make the bridge fall with aggressive playing. On the other hand, I used to play the Viola with 50-105 strings and the bass did it work with good, heavy tone.

i use my beatle bass copy with fingers all the time. sounds great. too many people have seem mccartney use a pick with one, and now that's turned into "hofners should only be played with a pick." stop with convention! break a few molds once in a while!
