Hollowbody

Yes, hollowbody basses generally sound different from solid bodies. Hollowbodies also tend to sound very different from each other, more so than solid bodies. Whether it's suitable for jazz is up to you.
 
Someone posted a thread recently with a couple of Jack Casady bass videos, including Jack and Jorma themselves. Excellent examples of nice sounds you can get out of that particular semihollow bass.

To me, with a hollow body you hear the wood and on a solid body you hear the pups. I am really liking the 2 Gretsch hollow body basses I have in my brood.

Rise from your grave! Thread is old, but the thing about hollowbodies is that they tend to have completely different bridge and saddle design than a regular bass. Usually more thump and less sustain
