This is good way to go. And if you like one of the amp models you can go buy are hardware version.
IK Multimedia uses manufacturer certified heads and cabs in their Amplitube models.

If you can find one of these they're worth a look. I bought one for my studio as a guitar head and sold my Aguilar about a week later. The control set is clever where the two inputs can be blended together or used as gain & master. The attenuation is a PPIMV but works well down the lowest setting. Between the two channels different voicing and the cascade mod built in there are lots of different tones available.
Typical Traynor....great gear, great price, low sales, high production cost and discontinued.

Hello,

I'm the very happy owner/user of a Little Bastard, it's a pure gem, I love it.
I love it.. but.
But... I listened to this Tone Demo - Cygnus X – 1 and I cannot imagine getting this kind of head-banging-kill-them-all-double-pedal-screw-the-system-praise-the-devil-metal-sound out of a Little Bastard without using a truckload of pedals... that would defeat the interest of the tube head .

The Little bastard is a gem for anything from jazz to classic rock, but it's not by itself a metal head (maybe driven to the tube's melting point.. but in a studio…. Not very possible, because this little beast can be far too loud ).

I guest, the same can be said of the two very interesting Ampeg PF

Not a problem with the Ampegs, because they have separate Gain and Master controls.

I haven't actually seen one in person, but an Ashdown CTM-30 Little Stubby, judging solely by its ad copy, could be just the ticket. I'd love to try one out.

Here's one in person. This just arrived from Ashdown yesterday. I ordered it directly from them. I'm really blown away by this amp. Great form factor, build quality looks great, and the range of sounds---and shear volume---are amazing! Of course I don't know if it'll hold up over time, but right now I'm pretty pumped!!

My studio setup is a semi-old school Alesis HD24 digital recorder into an analog Allen & Heath mixer. For bass guitar input I generally use a Mesa D-800 or Trace Elliot Transit-B Preamp/DI but when I need a true, tube-driven, "real deal" bass tone, this amp does the job in spades - 85 watt '60's Fender Showman into a 1x15 sealed cabinet, EV 15BX speaker, mic'd with a Sure Beta 52 mic. Nothing else I've tried in the past 19 years has matched it.
