Hondo II Professional P

Gratuitous posting simply because I'm having one of those moments where I just really dig this particular instrument. I picked up this little MIJ P Bass in a trade a while back, and like I was hoping, it's a great example of the quality that was coming out of Japan 30 years ago. For the money, this thing is a killer (I traded a bass that I had about 180 bucks in).

A very amateur iridescent spray can paint is just one of the great features. It's hard to capture in pics, but it looks blue, or green, or purple, or even brown depending on the light and the angle. I thought about refinishing it, but my kids like it, so....anyway. One of those pickups that's either DiMarzio or something exactly like it. And a super comfy, great playing neck. In a word, workhorse. I'm considering adding a J pickup at some point, as I love a good P/J combo (and I wouldn't be afraid to rout this body). Anyway, the photos:

There are more than a few Hondo's of that type here for the "workhorse" reason(yes, they've survived 30 years!). The Dimarzio pickup is an added bonus. If you really like the neck the Hondo/Fame, the Epi/Gibson Accubass, and the Ovation UB series bass all appear to have the same/very similar neck. Here's one like your avatar....

I have a late 70s Lotus brand P-copy that is identical to the Hondo Professional 830 model. It has the same headstock as yours (although a different logo, of course.)

Mine has a big hi mass bridge w/ brass saddles, identical to the one in the pic of the blue Hondo Johnny Crab posted. String tree is the same too. It's actually a darn nice bass. In need of a setup though...

Seems like two different companies used the same factory to build basses with the same specs but different brand names...

Nice score, love that irridescent paint job! I recently picked up a Hondo very similar to yours, though I'm not sure which model - a previous owner inexpertly refinished it and removed the logo. I was thinking about adding a bridge cover to mine, and yours has convinced me to do it - that looks cool!
