Hook Overdrive Tone

Hi all,

I'm looking to pickup an overdrive pedal this week, and I don't have much time to demo pedals. Can anyone help me find one that can come close to Peter Hook's New Dawn Fades tone?

Thank you very much!

Thanks for the message, jumblemind. I already use a vt bass for a clean pre. I'd really like to add an overdrive in front of it for this sound. I know chorus is associated with Hook, but honestly, I didn't hear it in that intro.

And I don't hear any overdrive, heh, but that's why I said a "bit" of chorus. It just sounds like an old bass being pushed a little hard through an old amp. You could probably dial in something close with the VT. If you wanted a separate pedal, you could definitely use a Leeds as an overdrive. Guy used a HiWatt at times, and that's what the Leeds is modeled after.

Somewhat similar sounds toward the beginning of this vid:

OR you could try out a BB Bass Preamp if you wanted a smaller pedal. The BB with its tonestack can give that old amp sort of overdrive sound.

Are you trying to get the sound of New Dawn Fades from Unknown pleasures?
He used an ibanez ric copy to record that, not sure if he went to the boards or used an amp. Not sure which.
What amp do you have a tube amp or SS? What kind of bass do you use?
You just need a little bit of drive, any of those low gain pedals will work, but also the Xotic BB preamp will work, and that's a good pedal to use as a booster too, it's cleanish at the lowest gain setting. But really it's got tube compression when he digs in with some furr around the notes. I spent so much money trying to get that sound with pedals, all I needed was a tube amp to get me there. But you can use pedals if you want an approximation. I think that tech 21 leeds should work, if you have the right bass.
He did not use a chorus on this song, I don't hear it.
