Hoping for advice on Danelectro

I really appreciate all the insight. And the comparisons between the instruments is really valuable. I have actually already picked up the Yamaha - I couldn't pass up what seemed like a really valuable deal, and it is killer. It has the most ridiculous low down growl, and tone for days. It sounds huge.

And considering the retail in my area was given as around $1400, even with a discount from a music dealer (who informed me they'd have to import it) I still paid less than a third of what it's worth.

I'm really interested in your perspective on the rarity of the Yamaha - just because it came up in your previous post.

I'm now still trying to decide if I should get the Dano, but it does feel a bit high in price and considering the other potential buyer I don't think I can talk it down easily. I'm also thinking my wife wouldn't be too pleased. But I am tying to gauge if I am leaving something behind that I shouldn't be.

Any and all comments welcome on either bass - I'm really pleased with the Yamaha so far although I'm getting lost in the 5 strings.

I must've missed that the Yamaha was a 5-string,that makes the comparison between the 2 even more diverse....

Generally speaking,the consensus of opinion seems to favor the 90's reissues as the best made ones,and the one i had was from that era,so i at least agree that it was one of the better ones i've played. A friend had a longhorn from a later period (2001-ish),and besides the fact that it didn't have the nicer hardware,it seemed not quite as well put together,as well. So that's my limited Dano experience. I've played a bunch of Yamaha basses over the years,and even their beginner models have been better than average instruments.

You don't much hear about Hodads, but both the Hodad and Longhorn are of interest to me. Jack Bruce played a Longhorn on part of the "Disraeli Gears" album. Rinus Gerritsen of Golden Earring played Longhorns a lot of course. By the way, Rinus also played a Yamaha BB3000 on a few Golden Earring albums and it sounded great.

A friend of mine has a 25 year old Yamaha bb300,and it's a superb little bass.
I bought a '77 BB1200 this past June,and i am loving it.

The 90s Hodad bass was long scale. The recent ones are, as far as I know, all short scale. The short scale ones would probably play and sound similar to a 56 bass. I have a 56 bass, and it's great.

People do love the long scale Hodads.

I had the exact same blackburst Longhorn but I gave it up to my Granddaughter so she could learn to play a couple years ago. She plays it at school and Church and she loves the thing! I set it up with Chromes before I shipped it to her on her Birthday. I think its an excellent bass and worth the money. By the way the Chromes are getting better and better with age.

I don't know for sure but I suspect this is a reissue, but the seller doesn't have many details. Unfortunately, it can be difficult for me to judge sometimes, as I am based out of the US and the market here seems be a lot thinner than in the US - so it can be tough to judge when I would get the opportunity on many instruments I come across a second time.

I might give this one a skip, as I don't think the seller is keen on dropping the price and it does strike me as being a bit on the high side.

I have found a couple other instruments I am evaluating against it as well - including a Yamaha RBX A2, for $550 or so. I really like the tone of that one. Any ideas on this one?

And I am likely picking up a tele today (6 string) so I can't go for everything all at the same time! ;)

Outside of the states this is probably a good price - in Canada for instance dealer cost is HIGHER than US retail (when moneysare converted to match). If you are in an English speaking country other than the US, that's a decent price.
This may NOT be the deal of a lifetime, but it's not bad. Also, comparing new to 90s MIK is problematic as those are the ones people want, so the price for used ones is about the same or even higher than new (in particular on the longhorn and the DC).
If you want a Dano - that's one of the ones to get - I understand the new MIKs are about the quality of the old ones - but still the demand (and thus the price) keeps the price of the oldies up.

There's no choice - the Yamaha is a decent instrument - but you'll be able to get this or more from the Dano - the Yamaha - not so much.
