I prefer the vegetable oil on the kitchen floor method.
I usually don't go for practical jokes, and I imagine that this one ended up with the roommate kicking the perp's butt, but it IS absolutely hilarious!!!!!!!
I lived with an International student when I was in college and she was quite a bit dirtier than us! She would leave her food out on the counter like onions and garlic. She would cook her curry food and smell up the entire place (and the flat above) and she'd walk around the apartment in her lingerie. She'd take hour-long showers and use up all the hot water and she'd steal our shampoo. Plus, she only showered once a week. ONCE A WEEK! And she'd sleep until noon. She said she didn't clean ever because she was from a rich house in Pakistan and cleaning was for maids etc. and she didn't know how to clean.
So, we had a big meeting. We created a central bulletin board where we tacked all the bills. We had a central calendar where we put when the bills were due and how much was due for each person in red. We had a list of chores and we rotated who did what and what day it was done on. Since the International student didn't do chores, we charged her extra rent. We had a "late jar" and if you were late paying your bill or doing your chore you paid a dollar to the late jar. Then we used the late jar money to buy alcohol. Putting everything in writing where we could all see it helped. And it sucks when no one else will take responsibility but that seems to be a fact of life. So the people who do take responsibility just do it. You'll get your reward in the end...what goes around comes around.
My roommate now doesn't clean the kitchen. It's irritating, but I get sick of yelling at her so I just do it. It takes 10 minutes and then I can enjoy a nice clean kitchen. I charge her extra rent too
