How bad is it to mix speakers?

Oscilliscope.

I haven't used one yet, but it puts a signal through the speaker (or anything) at different frequencies and measures the response in different ways, in this case, impedance.

It's an audio oscillator that creates the signal at the desired frequencies.
Then one measures current and computes impedance at various frequencies.

A scope doesn't really enter the picture at all.

Actually, you can do it with an oscillator and oscilloscope, can't you? If you put the oscillator through the speaker and a series resistor, and use the oscilloscope to monitor the amplitude of the waveform across the resistor as you sweep the oscillator, when the amplitude is at a minimum across the resistor, it's at its maximum across the speaker, and that's the frequency of maximum impedance.

Seems to me, anyway...
