How can people play with a long strap?!

I agree!!! It's so much more comfortable up high. Easier to play fast, tapping, slapping, everything is more comfortable with a higher up bass. I do play a lot of jazz though, which might be the reason. But man, I play up with my bass pretty high up! I don't get the appeal of a low strung bass myself... But to each his own I guess! 
I play my jazz around the waist and when I have to get high up on the fretboard I just bend over the bass and start head banging I get the high notes and people who are spectating get pumped, so its a win win situation

I never even played super low, like you see alot of people doing, but enough to hurt my hands and wrist. Technique was kind of an issue as well.
Around my waist is normal for me, and I can hit all the notes on my bass (24 frets, not that it matters) easily. sometimes I like to play with the strap as long as it gets (kinda like Robert Trujillo) But, it's harder to hit any notes past around the 14th fret (but not impossible).
How can people play with a long strap? Well, I'm 6'5". If I was 5-foot nothin', it'd be a different story.
+1 Even with strap pretty much all the way out, bass sits at my belly button or higher!

Well I'm 188cm, not much shorter than you, and my arms are long, and my hands are big... I can't do it.
I feel like I'm breaking my wrist when the bass is low.

Peter Hook of New Order made a living of it, although I think he ended up with back problems. 
He never had problems hitting the high notes, either. Sometimes it seemed like that was all he hit, in fact.

.Yep, roughly the same height. Anyways, I wear basses right around my waist, but I don't consider that especially low. I have long arms too, and I'm more comfortable when they're extended somewhat rather than up against my body.
They don't understand how you can play with another dude's junk either. I just tell em, "It's the same as playing with yours!"
