I always thought it was about pushing your mids/highs but I'm not sure which way i should push my mids since my amp has the semi-parametric adjustment.

Playing closer to the bridge seems to help as well, and if im using a pick use a stiff one.

I'd also like to know how much passive vs. active and humbucking vs. singles comes into play for finding a tone like that.

LOL that's what I think too. I am suspicious of people who try to play up the cute girl look with some weird angle. There are a few audio clips of some "girl" playing bass on youtube with a short skirt that she pulls up just a bit before playing. But the catch is that you can only see "her" legs.
