I love that tone! A lot of it has to do with the Jazz bass he's playing. It sounds to me like he has both pickups blended and plays right over the bridge pickup to give it punch while the neck pickup fills out the low end. The amp must have the treble cut back but I think the bass tone knob could be set open still and it's just the amp cutting the highs. I don't know for sure though... I know I try to get a similar sound and like it better when the bass tone knob is up full open. It allows for a more precise control of the highs through the amps EQ IMO.
