How do I get this sound ?

I'm looking to replicate this sound on my equipment, but can't seem to capture the right sound. Here's a YT clip of the sound I'm after:

I asked the guy in the video about his sound, and he was nice enough to tell me he uses old strings, a little reverb, and a little boost to the mid-range freqs, but what else is mixed into the sound that I'm missing ? He's got a great sound out of a fretted jazz bass, and his other video's show a similar sound from his fretless.

I'm using a Marcus Miller Jazz, Bass POD XT Live, Acoustic B100 amp.

Any help is appreciated...

he looks to be using a Jaco-sig fender jazz, with a late 60s/70s-style neck. Its a very jaco tone. playing quite hard by the bridge, favouring the bridge pickup, probably with the tone down a little.

It's nearly impossible to replicate someone else's tone. Even if you played on the exact same rig, with the exact same bass, and strings, your fingers, and your playing style have much more to do with the tone you hear than any piece of gear.

If you are playing at this same skill level tone should not be a huge issue.

Solo bridge pu. Tone rolled down. "Honk" the upper mids. DIG IN.

Mids emphasis, low action on the (fretless) bass, bridge pickup heavily favored if not soloed, tone taken down a few notches, dig in. Other than that, maybe some light compression when switching to the double/triple stops.

Thanks to all for taking a look at the video, and offering your suggestions. They are all appreciated. I'm just wondering if i need to look at getting a Boss GEB-7 Bass Equalizer Pedal to get those mids to stand out ?

Odd, his tone actually sounds like a midi tone to me. Almost synthetic and lifeless.

Not much personality in his playing IMHO.

i dont think he has a "jaco" tone at all. jacos sound was bridge-pickup soloed, yes, but it was deep punchy and growly at the same time. this guys sound reminds me a lot more of bunny brunel.. a jaco-wannabe, with a jacoish bridge pickup thing going on, but as everyone said, real mid heavy and nasty.

jacos trick was to turn the neck pickup off, turn the bridge pickup all the way up then back it off just a hair. it sounds much fuller, deeper, punchier, ext. when you set it like that. but the downside to this is you kinda have to leave your settings how they are, and you need more preamp gain from your amp to make up for backing off on your volume.

anyway, more on topic.

any jazz bass with a bridge pickup will get you as close as youll ever get to that sound.
