How do I know which is right?

Some people will say whatever sounds best. But for me as a beginner thats hard to do.

I had the same problem and the only way i got around it was by asking someone that knew there stuff.

But those are both the same, just played in different positions, i didnt look through the whole thing but the first bars are the same.
 
Pick the one that sounds better to your ear. Playing further up the neck will give you a fuller sound.

But the first thing to do is throw away the tab, learn your fretboard and learn to read music and try and work out the song by ear.

It'll take time but you'll be better for it.
