How do I tell singer sucks?

Completely disagree. He wasn't talking about hitting an occasional bad note or making a wrong choice or even doing something he didn't like. The guy can't sing. And if you can't sing you can't sing -- unless you feel like sticking around for a couple of years and see if he improves. That's a waste of time.

Your story about the guitarist who didn't want to play to a small crowd is not analogous.

I wasn't implying it was, it was merely an example of a guy being a complete tool for the sake of acting professional in a completely non-professional environment. It's just irritating to see people that are talented, or even not really very talented, in pretty much any area of anything that like to come across as special because they happened to have had rather alot of practise at it. People that have a natural knack for whatever it may be are in the minority, and people that are good at things have mostly had to develop that talent. Plus it's that kind of attitude which makes us young people not bother with anything, probably cos they saw some sod on youtube doing it much much better and decided they wouldn't bother trying, when you do try your probably going to be branded as "epic failz" cos you most likely won't be very good at it to start.

Anyway, all encompassing rant aside, it just irritates me when the solution to someone not being able to do something is to **** them and find someone else. The view of most singers I've spoken to that aren't up their own arse is that pretty much anyone can sing with the right attitude and approach. If you've been trying to do something in a fundamentally wrong way, then no matter how long you practise at it your practising the wrong way and aren't going to get any better. Maybe if this guy gets some help in the right direction then he'll improve.

It's pretty simple though really, if he wants to stick around and see if there can be any improvement then he should. If he can't be arsed he shouldn't and will save alot of unnecessary frustration.

Even though I'm the first guy that said "if the singer sucks, leave" I actually agree with you to an extent. The "I'm too awesome for everyone" attitude is a big part of the reason I didn't pursue music as a career--I tend to not get along very well with a lot of musicians because of that kind of baseless arrogance. It's better as a hobby for me.

My comment wasn't made based on me thinking I'm awesome, or that anyone without chops shouldn't play. I made it for the benefit of the OP. I assumed the OP plays in a band either for fun, or as a potential career choice, or to make some extra money, or all three. Frankly, being in a band with a really bad singer can hinder all three of those things. Why waste time in a situation where you're not getting what you want out of it? That's really all I was saying. Not dissing anyone.

On a side note, if you see someone on Youtube "doing it" at a level you suspect you'll never achieve and it makes you want to quit, you should never have been doing it in the first place. I'm never going to be Geddy Lee or Stanley Clarke--but when I see them I'm not discouraged, I'm inspired.

Oh yeah I wasn't accusing you of anything like, and what I mentioned about the youtube culture thing more related to teenagers and stuff, alot of them seem to be fairly apathetic due to that kinda thing. Like you I'm inspired by people that are awesome at things, and nothing bores me more then feeling like there's no way to improve at something.

I have a suggestion.... Listen to Dinosaur Jr. I'm sure his voice couldn't be as bad as J Mascis. I love Dinosaur Jr, and J Mascis' voice does a lot for their style... but... wow. Give it a listen, then think... It could be worse.
