If you are a cover band, it may help to decide either to have a theme or to be eclectic. Good cover bands are slaying right now in regards to pay and booking. You may be playing a fake tan, sleevless t-shirt, binge-drinking, chest-thumping, bar to "freebird" yelling morons but if you are able to whip out Skynrd and Journey at will you will have return customers with expendable, parental income. A themed cover band, whether it is an era, a genre, or a tribute band may help.
I say this in all seriousness, and I know the last line could be demoralizing, but really nailing a good crowd pleaser, even if it is tired, works. Most bars are full of drinkers you have to proverbially beat over the head. Integrity aside, I see handsome, sexy performers and loud, simplisically catchy percussion garnering success and attention every time.
