How do wood types affect sound?

Perhaps the question is not what it first seems. I'm not asking what different woods sound like and what they do to the sound, I'm asking how it is even physically possible that the type of wood that an electric bass is made out of can affect the sound picked up by a pickup which detects a changing magnetic field. Could someone enlighten me on the mechanics of how wood types change something that seems to be completely independent? :help:
 
Ever hear of OJ's book Invalid Link Removed? I'm not saying it does or it doesn't, but if it does, here's how it would go. ;)

The string vibrates in the magnetic field, and that vibration is what we end up hearing. But if the string were dampened mechanically, this would change the vibration of the string and therefore what gets amplified would be different. The mechanical system of the string is not perfectly separated from the body, because bridge and nut/zero fret design just isn't perfect (and what might be perfect from a mechanical standpoint might be seen by players as sounding awful).

So the string has some mechanical linkage to the body, and different materials dampen different frequencies more or less. So I think instead of the "resonance" that you hear a lot, it would be more apt to talk about the dampening of the body and bridge, or in other words, the wood doesn't add anything, it only subtracts.

In an extreme example, imagine that the bridge and nut were made of buttered toast. This would dampen nearly all frequencies and would make the bass have almost no sustain and sound awful, barely even producing an audible note. At the other extreme, imagine a string clamped to some ridiculously hard and dense imaginary material with almost zero dampening in any frequency. It would impart no color of its own, and would allow for much more sustain, but because we're used to wood it would sound to us like a very strangely colored sound.

In between these extremes is wood, and the particular ways that woods dampen particular frequencies would, if I did it, and I'm not saying I did, contribute to the "tone" and sustain profile that people say they hear.

I'm only getting into this because I'm hoping it won't be a "typical" tone thread.
 
String vibration is affected by the structure the string is supported by - bridge, nut, body neck - they all have some degree of influence on string vibration. It's a mechanical system, which BTW, also includes the air around the instrument - the strings are not vibrating independently of other parts of the system.
 
It definitely does make a difference what type of wood is used however depending on the amount of fx you use you can negate those differences or mask them quite a bit.

Take two guitars with the same pickups and strings, but say one has an Alder body and one has a Mahogany body - there will be some notable difference. I'm honestly not sure how that translates scientifically in what the pickups pick up from the strings. It does sound kind of hokey that wood type could make a difference to a pickup and strings that operate on magnetic principles. But within the realm of ordinary laws of physics it's plausible to suggest that how the wood resonates/vibrates will flavor affect the vibration of the strings in some fashion - enough to produce a distinct difference between wood types.

That said.. I've made one bass sound like another very very different bass just by adjusting eq settings on the 5 band eq of my Bass Pod XT Live. Got a deep growling bass with a Mahogany body (deep tone) and wegne neck and passive/active mighty mights to sound exactly like an old ibanez tr series that had a basswood body, maple neck, and in this case an active emg p style pickup.
 
I want someone to build a bass with different body woods. Everything else would be the same. Then record each bass in exactly the same matter. Then we could end all of these kind of threads. But, until that happens all we really have are opinions. I am not stating that any of these opinions are incorrect, but they are all subject to interpretation.
 
Well when people are asking what's the difference between basswood (good basswood) and alder... that gets a little tougher because they're both supposedly a very neutral tone but most would say Alder will be a more "full" tone with better sustain. But say Mahogany vs Maple? Pretty sure you're going to find a big difference. Before anyone says there's 'no difference' if they want to argue to that affect - be sure to eliminate variables by checking guitars through the same amps, same strings, tone knob settings, no fx pedals being used, etc. Just the raw real tone of the instrument.

But come on, you've got to say for acoustic guitars there's no question that woods make a big difference.

Tone war or no tone war - if I can make one bass sound identical to a completely different bass with completely different wood, strings, and pickups just by using a 5 band eq.... then at the end of the day... get a 5 band eq.

We all agree that acoustics matter. TWI, TWII, & TWIII have been about the amount that solid bodies contribute.

To the OP: John referenced an article that addresses this aspect and I found it quite fascinating. I will try to find it if he doesn't post.
