How do you build your distortion tones on studio?

Hi Justin

Can you share some details about how do you get those amazing distorted bass tones on your records? I'm interested mainly on the recording studio scenario, i know live is a different situation.

When it comes to tube heads do you rely mainly on the proper saturation coming from the amplifier or you always use pedals for enhance the sound?
Do you prefer a clean or semi crunch amp + pedals or you get most of the distortion from pushing the tubes on the amp?

Lately i've been experimenting with guitar or multi purpose tube heads like vintage Hiwatts or Orange and sounds fine for me but if i go too far with the gain the headroom dissapears...

I really just tend to use pedals in combination with a lightly blown-out amp, i.e. B15, SVT, Traynor Bassmaster, Fender Bassman. You should also experiment with guitar amps, even small ones. Really fun.
