How do YOU deal with tailgaters?

There's a reason why I asked "olps" the question and not you, Ray... he said this:

What do I do if someone is tailgating me? Well, if I'm in the fast lane (left) I'm usually going faster than teh speed limit (to pass or if it's not a highway) in which case I do nothing! I ignore the person until I have to change lanes or turn; I'm already going fast in the fast lane (above the speed limit is what I deem fast).

Notice the "until I have to change lanes or turn"? What's that got to do with passing? That's hanging out until he feels like moving. Intentionally keeping people behind him. Setting how far over the speed limit people behind him can go... while he's speeding.

Like I said, it almost makes sense.

How about answering my question first? You bring up reaction time when the point was that speeding was a factor in highway deaths. How does reaction time figure into that? He didn't say tailgating was a factor.

And you weren't tailgated or angry about him tailgating. A win-win that didn't involve medieval bumper attachments or drinks being thrown.

Speaking of which...
The beauty of the automobile is that it allows enough anonimity that any dweeb will act with impunity... safely esconced in their 1.5 ton weapon. I agree with BadB that tailgaiting is an unhealthy risk and should be avoided. Instead many people will force a confrontation with someone they have absolutely no clue about... could be having a bad day, could be fresh out of prison, could be suicidal, who gives a rat's ass, let's rumble.

No joke, I see a person coming up on me or tailgaiting and the first thing that comes to mind is "There's someone who's in a bigger hurry than me". Doesn't matter why, it's not like we're going to stop and have a conversation about the validity of his act. Let them go. People are rude. Life is hard. Wear a cup.

People are stupid. Some by choice.

I try to keep my interactions IRL with a-holes to a minimum. That is something I can control.

The internet is just for grins.

On the other hand, (disclaimer: I'm not a violent person) If someone were to hit my truck because of driving recklessly, (like riding my tail)
and my 11 mo son is in the car......There would be a serious woopin' to be had.

It's funny how people think the woopins' can only go one way;)

I drive the speed limit or a hair or two under. It's safer and more economical.

I think the same way. if someone wants to go faster than me who am I to stop him from doing it? In the rare occassion that I hold someone up by not getting out of the way fast enough I honest to goodness feel bad for getting in the way.

I really have no idea where people get this sense of entitlement about owning the road. It's not your freakin road.

How do I deal with tailgaters? Well typically I send about 5-10 rhythmic brake lights their way, not actually stepping hard enough to slow down much. If that doesn't send the message, I push my brakes real hard, but not hard enough for them to quite hit me. That usually sends the message REAL fast.

1. If my son is in the car, and some jerk causes a crash with me for recklessness (tailgating).....Just test me.;)
I'm totally cool with receiving a woopin' if it's deserved. But So far that hasn't happened. (knock on wood)

2. You are correct. Not an overall economical vehicle, but yes, relative to MY vehicle, it's better to go the speed limit or a hair under.
