How do you describe your role when asked?

Over the past couple of years and having the chance to play with better players every year, I would explain my role as this:
"My Job is to too make everyone else sound good"

Since I'm an old arthritic tinnitus ridden bedroom solo lead melodic riff student, who has never played with others yet, I call what I play therapy.
In Mexico it would be called 'matador de la Musica', or music killer.

PS-I'm on vacation/self-rehab/marital separation in the most cheesy hotel in La Paz and I've got the jonses for my basses. Can someone come by and let me play your bass for a while?

I would probably say "Hi, I'm Frank the bass player." if I were asked...

I don't think I've ever been in a situation where someone asked me what I did. They usually see me setting up and realize right away what I'm there for.
People just know what I'm doing. I get parents bringing kids up and pointing "He's playing bass...boom boom boom!" they just know.

On some of the musical theatre gigs I got some odd looks, because I was younger than the cast members and other band members... Some asked me if I was maintenance staff because I was always set up early and wandering around back stage or talking to the techs.

Then the first time I met Sharon Hampson (from Sharon, Lois, and Bram) and I was introduced as "Frank the bass player" and she said: "Oh, we love bass players!"
Of course her husband was the late Joe Hampson from the Travellers and he also wrote and recorded a lot of the SL&B music. There were many friendly hugs that night!
