How do you sell unwanted gear?

What method do you usually use to sell older or unwanted gear?

I’ve got several basses that I’m thinking about selling, and a new one that I have my eyes on. I’m not going to talk about what they are because I’m not a supporting member here, though. I’m curious how you guys move older gear.

I’ve used both eBay & Reverb with no problems. There are a lot of protections for buyers & sellers, if you follow the rules. It’s really pretty simple. You have a larger audience online, but if you use consignment locally, it may take longer & have smaller profit - but, someone else does all the paperwork.

Craigslist, always. Avoid the transaction fees and shipping costs and potentially taxes (if done in state). Better for the buyer and seller IMO. I've bought and sold hundreds of items in the last 10 years over CL and have not had one bad transaction. Granted, this works best when you live near a large population = greater density of buyers and sellers.

I strayed from this recently and bought a bass off of ebay. The seller shipped next day, but it has been nearly three weeks and USPS still hasn't delivered, and this is in-state transaction. I paid $350 and the seller got $250 and we're both frustrated by the delivery. I'd rather have $300 from my wallet to theirs and instant delivery.

Reverb is by far the fastest. If you're a customer, I'd say it's 9/10, but as a seller it is like a 7/10. For every purchase or legit offer I would get half a dozen absurd lowball offers, always from other music stores.

TB would be my first choice, but there are way less eyeballs. Ebay I haven't used in years.

CL I have only used for really heavy stuff. Can be a smoothe transaction or the person never shows up or stops responding for no apparent reason.

Never used FB or anything else.

I've sold everywhere. If you don't want the hassle of shipping, PayPal, eBay, Reverb fees (and don't mind taking less than you really want) sell direct to GC or Music go round....I did that yesterday and today and got about $100 less for everything total than I expected...but no fees and immediate payment were a bonus!

Talkbass is the first place I list gear for sale.
If no action I list it on eBay..
I’ve had good success on both websites.
I also go to the local music store and have put gear on consignment which is a bit more expensive but very convenient.

Craigslist in NYC allows seems to attract weirdos looking to pay by check and have their friend pick up gear or insist on getting my cell number. I never post gear there since there are no safeguards in place.

My last Reverb transaction was very unpleasant with a really difficult buyer so I avoid that site.. I know it was an isolated incident but the other sites/methods work best for me.
