How does someone do this?

Not too long ago I traded for a Squier Standard Jazz bass. I got it from some teenager who's in like a hardcore/thrash band. The bass was in pretty bad shape,as I expected. Sweaty grime all over the body,rusty strings,which were probably the originals,and badly out of tune.

Once a cleaned it up it's a pretty nice bass. However after changing the strings I saw this:

Anyone know how someone does this on a fretted instrument? I've been playing for close to 5 years now and have never done anything like this..:scowl:

Detuned String, playing that same note...or a moment of anger and really digging in. It wouldn't take that much for that to happen. It looks like you can see with winds pretty well...so I assume that it happened all at once.

Yeah, I play in Drop C and that happened to my old bass a few times actually. Playing hard on a detuned string can definitely do that.

I guess thats why it's never happened to me. I don't detune my 4 strings,I just have a 5 string.

That bass fell string side first into something with a fair amount of force. Fingers did not cause that, it's too long and nobody has that kind of strength to do that all at once. If it was caused by repetitive strikes on the same spot, the winds wouldn't be so clear and defined.

Yea ive seen that. The bass fell and rather than landing flat it hit something at that fret. Probably tipped and fell against a table.

It would have worn the fret down if the damage was done from playing, doesn't look like there is any marks on the frets what so ever.

Probably a clumsy drummer knocked it off the stand and into the drum riser.

Possibly grabbed his mic stand and wacked it against the strings to make a bunch of noise

De-tuned string + Too much awesome = Yeah that'll do it
