How does the bass get routed through the sound?

Your band is too small to worry about running the bass through the PA. You could get powered subs, but if you end up in a different outfit that has a proper PA, those subs will likely be redundant. My advice is to get a bigger bass rig.

Do you think I need a bigger rig than a hartke HA 5000 with a 210 XL cab and an Ampeg b-15cab ? My experience playing with other folks is that who ever owned the pa usually called the shots and you could either take it or leave it. It would be nice for once to not have that hanging over my head. That is, being able to play music with out telling me be careful with the speakers, dont you think your bass is too loud? don't turn the knob too much. Dont worry about the way the system sounds, that guy over there is taking care of it etc, etc, etc.
The other thing I was thinking was that buying a stand alone amp would enable me to use it to power an accugroove cab later. Just a thought.

If you want to build your own PA just go for it. Keep reading and asking questions like you are. Even if it is considered overkill for your current situation, with careful planning you can cover a lot of different situations. Just be aware first and foremost, your bass guitar needs a full range sound reproduction. You simply cannot use subs and no tops and get your bass to sound good.

Sorry I haven't got back with you guys. I am an oilfield mechanic and have been out in the field a few days. No easy internet out there. Anyway, I really appreciate all the great info. I have really learned alot talking to you guys and poking around this section of the site. I was amazed at the graphs that show how the sound coming out of the subs actually looks when placed in different locations and where they should be placed. Also I didnt realize that your personal rig could actually react with the FOH system and have areas where the sound is absent. This fascinates me and I will be doing a ton of learning before I make any bad decisions. Thanks again for all your suggestions and input. I think any purchase at this juncture would probably be followed by regret. I think getting a little more educated and hearing some more systems and seeing how they are set up is probably in order. I will post here again before I drop any money on anything. Joseph
