How does the cab sim stuff actually work through physical cabs?

Hey guys,

I'm trying to understand how say an Ampeg SGT-DI with the 8x10 cab sim on, can sound like an 8x10 through say a 4x12 physical cab, or a 115? The sim would mimic the sound of an 8x10, but would then actually go through a real life cab of whatever configuration. Does that mean that whatever sound comes out of that physical cab will be the sum of the 8x10 mimic plus the speakers of the actual physical cab?

Reason I'm asking is that I'm interested in the Ampeg SGT-DI, but I use a Schertler BF15 combo, which is great btw....
 
I wouldn't use a cab sim through an actual cab, would probably be a muddy mess, but who knows? It could sound good in the right setup.
I have used cab sims going direct, but I have personally found them only to be good with something with a lot of top end, like rounds with heavier distortion. When I play my P Bass with flats for example, I find an HPF/LPF sounds a lot better.

I think you misunderstand the intent of a cab SIM.

Musical instrument cabs tend to have a baked in tune. Part of this is the frequency response may be limited and also uneven. For example an Ampeg 810 is pretty heavily voiced and it starts rolling off the lows around 80hz and the highs around 5kHz.

The intent of cab SIMs is to emulate the sound of the 810 when you are playing through a full-range, flat-response system. It's not intended to make another instrument cab sound like an 810.

The 412 will most likely has it own baked-in tone. You might like the 810 cab SIM running through the 412, but it's not going to sound like a 810.

Run the 810 cab SIM through a good full-range, flat-response monitor and it should do a reasonable approximation.

Ampeg SGT-DI

To give the SGT-DI or any other IR loader an honest chance, you have to play it through a Full Range Flat Response cabinet. There are some manufacturers claiming FRFR cabs, but they don't provide the measurements. PA/FOH cabinet makers do provide actual cabinet measurements. You might want to try a powered PA cab for the best chance and experience.
