How does the FX25 work

Now I know how to get the low pass filter sound and all that but it is the only filter I've heard to sound like this. I can get a low pass sound with my Gurgle and Moan but it's not a big and bassy as the FX25 is it also boosting something? I've nevber heard a Mutron or Moog get this sound either.

I'm just wondering that makes this one so good at that low pass that no other low pass capable filter can do it?

I have a question about the fx25 too.
I just got a 2nd generation one and I can find some usable settings but it distorts easily. Is that typical or is there something wrong with mine?

Older FX25's are prone to two common failings: distortion and a drop in output level. I'm almost positive both are due to certain parts "going bad" with age- I specifically recall someone else posting that the level-drop was just a single resistor or pot. Unfortunately I haven't finished diagnosing/troubleshooting the ones of mine that need work, so I can't yet point to which specific parts need to be replaced.

As far as "why they sound the way they do", they are a different filter design than the Moog or Mutron. There are a number of different ways to cause filtering with different circuit designs, and they all sound different. It's inherent to the design, not just a question of certain components.
