How does the tone differ on a fretless?

I play fretted and fretless...it's hard for me to describe the difference. There are many posts you can research on this board, but I know of a good one you might try. Go to Birdsong Guitars and go to their sound samples. Play the corto bass sounds, then go to the fretless sound. There's a WORLD of difference.

When you play fretted, every note you play lands on the same spot, so the pitch of the note is the same every time. This produces a very dialed in, clear sound.

When you play frettless, even with lines on the fret board, it is very hard to play the EXACT same note every time. Also, the stings on a frettless make more contact with the fretboard, producing sort of a muffled kind of "hum" or "mwwahh" take a few minutes and listen to that guy... Jaco Pastorius (?) he used to play a frettless, and most people consider him the best.

Also, Death From Above 1979 plays a frettless bass.
