Then - Willing to put up with a lot of BS just to keep a band together.

Now - Emphasis on bandmates being good human beings (as opposed to simply being good musicians) is much more important, & my BS tolerance is much lower.

Then: Ibanez Roadstar passive, quickly to active, mainly only one bass owned at a time. Rig was heavy old second hand Peavey, strings were rounds, played fingerstyle. Band for a decade did parties, covers, weddings etc. Good bunch of people, had fun.

Interim: Lots and lots of basses from lots of mainline and exotic brands. Not much gigging through this period. Tastes in basses didn't change much.

Now: Ibanez 5 and a 6, active. Rig will be Harley Benton Block 800B amp and some lightweight custom cabs. Strings are still round, played fingerstyle.

I found what I liked fairly early on, tried just about everything in the middle, and went back to what I liked in terms of basses ergonomically and sonically, just with a string or two more for extra range and more positions to play in. Plus lighter rigs. Music is still covers, but the girl I work with wants me to play more melodic stuff so I'm getting to use a little of The Ox's influence these days. Going to set up a band at my new Church too.

Fender Precision to numerous others such as G&L ASAT, PRS, Rickenbacker, Epi Les Paul and Epi Embassy (reissue). Almost every time, there was a Precision sunburst in between. BTW the Ps were never a PJ.
Now, not for the first time, short scale basses are my thing. Love the tone, the feel, the light weight.
I've owned many quality instruments but my current go-to is a new Danelectro Longhorn. Go figure! Have a new Shorthorn too.
Strings - I got flats on an old Gibson EB-4L and that put me on a kick for flats that lasted over 10 years. Then I discovered tape wounds. Tried those for about 5 years. Now I'm using round wounds (nothing 'bright') and using those on all 8 basses.
I tried, and didn't care for: active electronics, 5 or 6 string basses, any bass effects. When recording, the engineer always puts me direct into a compressor then to the mixing console.
Amps - I've had many brands and configurations; tube and solid state. I'm done with tubes (weight, cost) but have no problem at all with their tone. Done with heavy head + cab setups too. It's an aging thing for me. Light weight for easy transport.

I have moderately softened my position on Coffeetable Whale Hump basses, somewhat.

In past years I tended to favour thru-neck, active 4 & 5 string basses ( predominantly Warwick and Spector ).

More recently I fell back in love with passive 4 string basses ( Gibson T-bird & Fender Jazz ).

Now, I've fallen head over heels with multiscale basses and pretty much exclusively play a passive Dingwall D-roc Standard 5.
