How have your tastes changed?

It's been interesting seeing how my bass tastes have changed over time--how about yours?

Now: medium scale

Then: semi-hollow body
Now: solid body

Then: neck pickup and dark, fundamental-heavy tone
Now: middle (even slightly bridge-ward) pickup and articulate, mid-rich tone

No change: limited neck taper, narrow string spacing at bridge

No change: flat wound strings

Well, even though I'm equally comfortable with fives and fours, I was determined to regularly rotate both into my playing.

Now, I'm thinking just bag the four strings and go with my two Peavey Cirrus fivers. So comfy and string 5 is so handy.

My tastes change constantly. Right now I'm in a passive Fender style phase. And I started my journey with a P bass in the mid 80s.

But I have had fretless, active, headless, pointy, and all kinds of horses along the way. A fan fret (multi scale) is next.

My tastes have changed from being uninformed about sound to knowing what sort of bass is right for what kind of sound. It only took 25 years .

I didn't start off with a particular love for any one kind of bass, I was trying to chase this imaginary concept of one bass that would do everything. Now I know that isn't how it works.
I liked expensive basses when I was a kid, and I still do.

Mine evolved from 2 saddle slabs to ASATs and back to 2 saddle slabs.

And they say you can’t go home.

I used to find Fender and FSOs (Fender Shaped Objects) unappealing. Bulky, archaic things.

TB has helped me to appreciate FSOs. I now see them as the muscle car of basses. There's a charm in original pieces and a tastefully modded one will whoop some ***.

I think my tastes havent changed, I've just learned how to define them. And choose the gear that will get me there. Lately it's been P bass pickups, Jazz necks and fender amps.

I was a Hofner player from '68 to '98 and always wanted a Fender bass.
Once I got a Fender, world's collided. Ever since it's been a P or J for me.

If anyone had told me 5 years ago that one day my main bass would be a multiscale/fan fret and that the majority of the basses in my collection would be fenders I’d have laughed at them. But that’s exactly what’s up today lol
