How important is compression in your signal chain?

I'm curious where everyone's at on their compression journey. Do you use it at all? Is it always on? Where does it sit in your signal chain? And so on.

I haven't really used many standalone compressors, and I've always found them a bit intimidating to dial in properly. There was a time (probably close to 20 years ago) when I loved the Boss LMB-3, but after testing it again, I don't love it as much; I think it was mostly just useful to even out my uneven playing when I was getting started.

At this point, I'm interested in trying out some new stuff, but I'm not sure what I should be looking for, and I also don't want to place more importance on a compressor than it really deserves.
 
For bass guitar I regard compression as very useful, and for acoustic-electric guitar with piezo pickups, I regard compression as essential and indispensible.

I use a Boss BC-1X and a tc electronic SpectraComp, for which I have written my own custom toneprint, documented in a thread somewhere here.

It does take a bit to program a multiband digital compressor like the SpectraComp, but its flexibility is unmatched. The thing about compression is, it's not one thing, it's many things, depending on how you set it up, but whether or not you can make any given compressor do more than one thing is entirely dependent on how much access you have to the parameters that matter.

The right kind of compressor, set the right way, can do things to your signal that no amount of skill in your fingers can do. Not all compressors can do this for you, however.

The big mistake a lot of people make is thinking that the only purpose of compressors is to knock down peaks so that the average level is more consistent, and it's because of this that a lot of people disdain the use of compression and will tell you you just need to practice more so your dynamics are more even.

But, compressors can also be used to effectively do the opposite of compression, which is called "expansion" (and unit that does both is a "compander"). The easiest way to do this is by setting your compressor to have a relatively slow attack time, so that it allows the transient peak of your note to pass unhindered, and then closes down on the body of the note, increasing the relative difference between the peak and the body of the note. Suddenly, you aren't decreasing dynamic range, you're increasing it.

A fully featured compressor should allow you to control independently:

attack time (how quickly the compressor compresses)
release time (how quickly the compressor stops compressing)
threshold (at what volume level the compressor starts compressing)
ratio (how much the compressor actually compresses once it starts compressing)
knee (how smoothly the compressor transitions between compressing and not compressing)
makeup gain (how much the signal is amplifed after the compressor)

This is my main bass guitar pedalboard. My compressor is always on. This board is designed to be used with my Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay fretless with piezo pickups, hence the Acoustic Preamp, which I turn off when I am playing with the magnetic pickups. This setup seems to sound better to me when I put the AD-2 before the BC-1X, than the other way around.

I used to never use compression (or any pedals for that matter). But once I got my Aguilar TLC Compressor, it's pretty much always on. It's first in my signal chain for bass and piccolo bass because it enhances my overall tone and evens out the frequencies on my recordings.
 
I've been using an EBS Compressor pedal for the last 20+ years. It's an always on pedal. It helps tidy up the peaks and valleys and adds thickness and punch.

Do you need one? No.
But once you use a good quality one, you will likely not want to be without it. IMO, there is a tangible, audible improvement when using a good one.

I actually see a few people commenting about the boss bc-1x,
I love this pedal, and I think it is very underrated
 
First in my signal chain, always on. Cali76CB set to a "NYC style/sidechain" setting (fairly high amount of compression but the signal set very dry).

The Cali76CB does a very nice job of this and also adds a bit of musical high mids something-something (presence ?)

I've used it this way for the past 6 years and it's not going anywhere

I used to leave compression up to FOH until just this week when I got the Empress. Took me a while of working with comprehension to know what to listen for and how to get the sound I want.

Spent about an hour of work with our FOH engineer to get a sound that he liked, but after the set we had four different musicians compliment the bass tone.

Here are my finger style settings for my 2006 MIM P Bass with Nickel Rounds:

None in my own rig. I don't like it as an "effect." It sounds and feels horrible to me. I play with the dynamics and amp settings I play with for a reason, and they are not to be "corrected" or "evened out" by anything in my own rig, operated by me.

There's a use for it to make the dynamic range of your part compatible with the mix, in a given scenario (live or in studio). But that's a consideration for the professional engineers, so I let them do what they need to do to fit me in to their mix the way they think is best. Not my job. I play my bass part exactly the way I want it to be played; they fit it in to the larger picture.

I'm pretty traditional:
Live - never in my rig, leave it to FOH.
Recording - usually track with none or very little(if it is on it's usually for a "flavor" a particular unit imparts and not for any heavy lifting gain reduction - that is left for the mix stage).
Ultimately I hate the feeling of "playing to the compressor" in any scenario.
 
i picked up a 80's yamaha co10m comp (i really liked what i heard on git so i'm trying it on bass) so i'l find out. never used them for guitar or bass but every studio has plugins for comp.

now what placement, my chain will be

SVT350-Boss TU-3-SansAmp-Boss-OD3-MHP 98.6 TS clone-88 super oscillo fuzz(clone)-Katanasound super bass fuzz-Yamaha TRB4.
out liers BF-2 flanger OC-2 Octave

comp before or after fuzzes?
