Upright bass lessons using a hair tie? Ive always use it for slap bass and playing around with tone on my electric, how do you use it on an upright? To be totally honest I know nothing about them but how they are tuned and that they have really nice tone. (actually I use a face cloth and some ducktape insteat of a hair tie it works alot better imho

Many years ago I was in NY and went to a club to hear a drummer from my hometown who was beginning to make it in the Big Apple. Coat and tie required. Welll the maitre'D gives me a rumpled plaid jacket abandoned by some race-track tout and some gawd offal neck wear of which I am now reminded... Uh-huh it was indeed a fluffy hair tie.

I was reminded of this thread on Friday when I was watching a live recording on TV of a McCoy Tyner concert in London - with his own quartet.

So the Double Bass player played solos that consisted entrirely of slapping and tapping the strings - hitting them with his thumbs and bouncing off - then doing the same with a bow.

I was wondering about fines for "bow abuse" - it was impressive for a few seconds in a rhythmic kind of way - but it had nothing whatever to do with the tunes being played and seemed to be entirely about "showing off"...

So it does happen in the DB world!!

Well - I've seen him "popping" a lot on bass guitar/piccolo bass - but I've never heard/seen him slap a Double Bass -with or without a bow!!

I think such a thing has already been added to the bow stroke vocabulary, for better or worse.

I saw Stanley Clarke live with Jean-Luc Ponty and Al DiMeola, they played trio stuff and Stanley played exclusively Double Bass. All he did was exactly the same stuff he does with a BG. If you closed your eyes it was hard tell any difference.
Personally I don´t dig too much that kind of stuff, but it was fun to see, though. Amazing player, with DB and BG.

Oh right I was just going on his recorded output - like "Light as a Feather" and I do have a video where he is playing DB with Chick Corea and Joe Henderson - where he plays some great but conventional DB solos.
