my amp has both "high" and "low" input ports, as most amps do. i obviously plug my bass into the high and cuz i wanted to play along with a song on my ipod, i plugged that into the low. i wanted to turn my bass up, so i used the volume knob on the bass itself. doing so doesn't turn my bass up, but what was playing on my ipod. i dunno if it's a dumb question or not, but how/why does this happen? and... what's possibly a better way to be able to hear my ipod while playing along on my bass?

STOP DOING THAT! Your Ipod is back feeding voltage into your bass's pickups!
Get one of many bass headphone amps, pedals with aux input, practice combo with a aux input or a small cheap mixer.

I use a $50 Vox Amplug (for bass) and headphones. I plug the Vox Amplug into my bass's input jack, and then plug my ipod and my headphones into the Vox. Works like a charm! And I can practice as much as I want without disturbing anyone because nobody hears me except me!
yikes! i'm glad i asked before i end up doing some damage to my beloved bass.

Why not get a set of powered computer speakers to run your ipod through.
I got a real nice Altec Lansing speakers on sale at Best Buy for $45. They sound great.
