How long did it take you to learn the bass?

At all? Song parts in a few weeks. More (though not particularly well) in a few months.
I'm 10 years into playing and I'm still learning something new everyday. If you meant how long did it take to learn how to play something comprehendible on the bass then.... probably a month or so. Get a tab froma good song thats not complex or learn a scale. Then you'll start sounding cool.
played a full song (Ride The Lightning) about 3 weeks after i started playing. came up with something good(imo) of my own after 2 months. i agree with the `you never stop learning' thing. im sure ive got alot to learn, i've been playing since January. and being good enough to play in a band, for me two months, but when you start it sometimes sucks, so good enough to contribute would be about 4 months. its been 8 months now and im getting lots of offers so apparently people are thinking of me as good now. i dont think of myself as good, but whatever.

Start playing songs? First day. Play any song well enough not to screw up a group? Maybe a few months. Play a song as close to identical with the original as feasible? Maybe a year, for songs I'd want to listen to. Play any song well enough to satisfy me? Well, I have a dream...
I agree that you never stop learning, unless you stop trying to! Also there is not a timetable for learning to play! We all have talent that God has blessed us with, some more that others. Some people learn very quick, others not so quick! I'm somewhere in the middle of that pack I think. I suggest just learn at your own pace, when you have something down, move on to something new. I've been playing for around 45 years and I know players that have been playing 10 years that are better than I am, on the other hand I know people that after 40+ years still are not capable of playing in a band for money. We are just not all gifted with the same talent. Just pick it up and do it, and believe in yourself!
I already had a decent backgroud in music, so picking up bass was a piece of cake for me. Guessing I was around 12 or 13 when I first picked up a bass, and had been playing music since I could reach the keys on a piano.
The first time I had ever played bass was with the band I was playing guitar in at the time, so right away.
That said, that was well over 25 years ago (closer to 30), and I still pickup little things here and there.
Even if you think you're not good enough to play with a band... give it a try. Playing with others will help you get better IMO. You might just be surprised at how quickly too.
