HOW LONG HAVE YOU KEPT YOUR MAIN BASS ?

This 1990 ExFactor has been my #1 for a little over 21 years. I've acquired several more, but I always come back to this one.

I think i got my Guild around 1990, so 35 years and counting, my avatar photo is from the first year or so i had it. It was my 3rd bass and my only for a long time, still gets out for around 1/2 of our shows.

I've had my main bass (a 58 custom shop) for 3 years now, and I use it just a little more than my 66 p, but from 2011-2020 my main and really only bass was a 2009 American Standard jazz bass my parents bought me new from a store (it had been sitting in the back room for 2 years). Still have it though I rarely use it.

I bought my Silvertone 1444 in 1978, so 47 years. It was never my main bass, though.

Steinberger L2 about 35 years.

62 P 24 years, 53 P 20 years.

1985 Westone Spectrum GT, got it brand new as a gift from my mom when I was in high school.

Back in 1983 I saw INXS and Gary Beers playing a Steinberger bass and I had to have one . Bought one at Chuck Levins and it was my main bass for the next 9 years . It was the longest time I ever played one bass ......yesterday after 30 plus years I bought a Steinberger Spirit ........one of those don't need it but got to have it buys .

I've had my 1990 Wal MkII5 string for 25 years and will never get rid of it.

That's the one bass I could never part with. 2004 Sterling bought in 2004.

The bass I've had the longest is my Lakland 55-01 that I bought from a TB member about 15 years ago. It was used and I believe it was built in 2001.

My "Main" bass is this home-built Faux Lemmy Rickenbacker clone, so I've only had this one a couple years, but I still own my 83' G&L L2k, my 86' Steinberger XP-2, and a Warmoth Jazz parts bass I put together in 1987 or so. I keep my basses a LONG time. I should probably sell the ones I don't play, but they all have sentimental value to me.

I'm on year 25.

Purchased my Jazz bass in 1976 for $125. Came in a case that wasn't worthy of a bar pool cue. I eventually started making it my own with a refin, active pups, a brass nut, brass conrol cavity cover, replaced the tort pickgaurd and of course a badass II bridge. Used it and only it for about 35 years till a guitarist complained that I needed a backup. Hence... the tsunami of basses into my musicroom.

Admittedly it's been bumped from number one status a couple times. Recently I've gotten the shortscale bug.

Well, it depends, since my 'main bass' has changed over the years. But I still have all of them. In order of tenure and 'No 1' status:

• '90 Peavey Dyna-Bass purchased used in '92
• '00 Modulus Q5 purchased as NOS in '02
• '14 G&L M-2000 ordered and purchased new that year
• '23 Reverend Mercalli 5, purchased new in '24

I have a couple other basses but these have all taken turns being the No. 1 for gigging.

I bought this Ricky 4001 brand new in 1973 or 1974. It was my only bass for many years and I still have it. I had it modified in the early 90s though I still have a stock 4003.

My 1975 Fender Jazz bass that I purchased new. It is now 50 years old. It has 1,000's of gigs on it and it has never failed me. Other than strings, it is 100% original. It helped me earn my way through college.

A year and a half after I purchased that bass, I proposed to my wife. In about 2 1/2 months from now, we will celebrate our 47th anniversary. My wife is far more important to me than the 1975 bass.

I was very lucky when I got my Jazz bass and even luckier when my bride said, "Yes."

I've had my 4-string custom hand-made Allen Breaux Boogie Man bass for 30 years. It was my main bass for nine years (pictures below). I switched to 5-string 20 years ago, so it doesn't see much use now. But I'll never get rid of it.

I don't have a "main bass" these days. I switch off between my Tobias, Pedulla and Heartfield basses. No rhyme or reason, just whatever I'm in the mood for.

I started playing bass (uke) in mid 2014 after playing rhythm guitar for almost 50 years, a year after I switched to ukulele. The first one was a Gold Tone GT 23" scale acoustic/electric that I kept for about 9 years, going through an additional 53 basses in that time, but when I had to accommodate neck nerve damage from radiation treatments for lymph cancer many years ago, I settled on 21" scale violin/Hofner style Chinese knockoff that was most comfortable, the oldest was in 2020. I do have one custom thinline gypsy jazz Django style 21" scale.

Had Eric's Guitar in Sound City (yes, that Sound City) replace the floating bridge and wonky piezo with a high mass bridge and mini humbucker pickup, using flatwound nylon core bass uke strings that to our surprise, actually work with magnetic pups. Pat Wilkins did the finish work. These I plan on keeping for a long time.
