HOW LONG HAVE YOU KEPT YOUR MAIN BASS ?

I built this bass in '76 when I was living in Miami. it was the first PJ I'd ever seen. it has original Bartolini pickups. it was originally passive, but I upgraded it to a Bartolini preamp in around '90. the body is Hondorus mahogany with maple stringers. the neck is from my late 60's jazz bass. I put an ebony fingerboard on it and extended the neck by 1 fret. it plays and sounds great, tho it's quite heavy, 9 1/2 pounds. I refretted it for the first time about 1 year ago.

Very nice! You have the same tuners that are on my '90 Jazz plus. Are those Schallers or Fender F-stamped tuners (which were also Schallers but under Fender brand)?

I own many basses and have owned many basses over the years, but if we're talking main basses, my list would be:
1) 1993-2005 Stingray 5 (12 years)
2) 2008-2022 Dingwall Super J5 (14 years)
3) 2022-Present Sandberg VM5 (co-#1 with a Sandberg VT5) (3 years and counting)

I still own all of them.

I don't really have a "main bass" any more. I have so many these days, that I just grab a different one pretty much every time I play. I plug it in, turn some knobs, and lo ad behold, it sounds like me playing bass.

However, I have the bass I learned on back in 1988. Fretless. I played it pretty exclusively till about '96, when I got a different fretless bass. I still have both of these, as well as the short scale fretted bass that I sometimes played from the beginning.

Basically, aside from an Epi EB-3, a Squier Jaguar Short Scale, a Squier Bronco, and about a half dozen late model (i.e. 2015 and up) G&Ls that I moved along in the past few years due to quality complaints, I have every bass I've ever owned since 1988.

Got this new in 2005. Still my favorite Stingray. So put me in for 20.

Back in 1983 I saw INXS and Gary Beers playing a Steinberger bass and I had to have one . Bought one at Chuck Levins and it was my main bass for the next 9 years . It was the longest time I ever played one bass ......yesterday after 30 plus years I bought a Steinberger Spirit ........one of those don't need it but got to have it buys .

I don't have a main bass. I have four that get played according to how I feel at the time but I still have the one that I made a living with for decades. That's my old '73 Precision that I bought in 1974.

I play a couple of different basses for different bands/gigs
but I 'spose these two could be my "main" - certainly my oldest.
Got and modded the '75 P in '80. Still gets played out, just did a cover band gig with it Saturday night.
The '77 Ripper is the only bass I ever bought new. She doesn't get played out a whole lot any more, since my two elder jazzy trio mates passed on. But still gets played every day.

I've had my bought new Ric 4001 for 46 years and it has served me very well. I don't play it much since I got into 5s a few years ago, It still plays and sounds fantastic

This was my longest serving #1. 14 years of the last 40 this was my go to. I still have it but it's no longer #1. I've gone full time short scale.

6.5 pound bordwell. 34". I'll probably sell it after the economy recovers.

The oldest bass currently in my collection is a 2013 Fender MIM Geddy Signaure Jazz. Prior to that I owned a 1984 Ibanez RB850 from time of purchase until I sold it to help fund the Geddy. Interestingly... I bought the Ibanez at Chuck Levins. I grew up in Maryland about 30 minutes from both Chuck Levins and Veneman music in Rockville.

Bought a brand new G&L L-2000 in 1997 and kept it until 2020 after not having played it for several years. (23 years with that one.)

I'm not entirely sure which one of these four I consider my "main" bass, but
- I've had the Steinberger L-2 (far right) since 1982
- I've had the Modulus Graphite Quantum-6 SPX (2nd from left) since 1988
- I've had the Schecter Venus B/4 (2nd from right) since 1995
- I've had the Lakland Skyline 55-02D (4th from left) since 2009

Thnx… I do love this bass. The tuners are shallers. No idea what happened to the originals. Like many things, lost in the fog of time.
