How many bass guitars do you need?

I have been a Jazz Bass guy forever. I didn't think I needed a P bass until I got one.

My point is YES you need a P LOL. Personally I wouldn't get a new American P bass. They are way overpriced for what you get IMO. I would look at CV Squier P Bass before a new American Fender.

^ This.

I did just that. CV Precision (FR with Tort guard - HA!).
Set of Chromes.
Wowza.

I've got 3 - and I want at least two more. Got an Epi Blackbird (always wanted it as a kid, had to do it for youth nostalgia. Luckily it sounds good too), corvette 4 string and a rockbass streamer 4 that I did a de-fret on. I also want a 5 string (brand still not determined yet) and a P bass at some point. I have owned other basses in the past and gotten rid of them for whatever reason at the time, but I am not really wanting to sell any more basses. If I get 2 more and own 5 basses, then I will have a full guitar rack :D

Is it all necessary? Yes. Will it ever be enough? No.
Not until I have a bass of every conceivable configuration for 2 different tunings. So basically around a dozen basses and I would be happy (will NEVER happen though). If you want to add another bass to the collection, I say do it if it is financially viable. Don't forget that it isn't impossible to sell your instruments if you feel that you have too many or you don't like it. The deal you make with the music shop is a very different one to the deal you made with 'old blue lips' when you obtained her ;)

Hope my wife never reads this post, she might just leave me!! hahaha

Cheers,
Jordan

If you want a P bass, get a P Bass. No other justification is necessary.

Can I hear an AMEN! :hyper:

I have 12 bass guitars thus far. I don't gig or belong to any band. Why do I have 12? Cause I can. :bassist:

If the question ever came up with the wifey, I'd ask her:
"How many pair of shoes do you NEED?", or even better: "How many purses do you NEED?"

BTW, she only knows about four of my bass guitars.
Women should be on a "need to know" basis, IMO. ;)

Agree with both assertions. I have at least three or four more that I want as it is. Funny thing is that the wife thinks I'm crazy or something for having "too many" bass guitars (and she only knows of four of them!). Women are funny like that.

Yeah, as many as the wife will let me have. She doesn't really care anyway, as long as I can justify at least a little bit that they're different from each other and serve different purposes. She'll probably wise up before too long, but I've also gotten amazing deals on everything I have and can also say, "Well if I need to sell this, I'll actually make a profit because I got it for less than it's worth." I say buy as many as you can without putting an undo financial burdon on yourself. If you're trying to extend lines of credit to get another bass, then stick with what you got. That's my $.02.

I only have true justification for 2 (1 in std tuning and 1 tuned down a half step for the band) but I have 6. That number is a self-imposed limit. I love basses. Need has got little to do with it.

I find my J-Bass can handle just about any song throwen at her. I can change the mode and attack by changing my finger style from straight on agressive pluck, slap and other wise wail on her to walking the dog with the meaty side portion of your index finger a-la doublebass style. I generaly leave my amp flat (MoMark) and let my lovlies tone do her thing.

ALL OF THEM!

You sniped me!

I thought Irish bass players all played '50s single coil style Precisions.

I could live with two: a P with flats, and something modern. I have those two right now - Fender MIM P and a Yammie RBX.

I also have a sixer and a Squier CV 50s P bass. I don't really need the Warwick 6 at all. I don't really need the Squier, but it covers vintage looks and sounds beastly. I am trying to sell the 6, and maybe I'll get another Yamaha or a five or a fretless or acoustic... Something different. Or pay some bills. I won't sell the Squier because one day we'll look back and remember when Squier made a better bass than MIA Fender.
