Say Jean, I have a question: is it possible to play an ordinary bassline on those things? It seems to mee that your hands would overstretch, unless they are 6 feet wide ;)

Yeah, ordinary basslines no problem. Stuff over the 17th fret on a regular 4 or 5-string, I'll typically:

1) move to a thinner string
2) tap
3) Use thumb position

Around the nut, the spacing is usually pretty tight so playing in that area is not an issue.

When someone unfamiliar with one of these instruments picks one up for the first time, usually they will have more of a problem plucking the same string they are fretting, rather than not being able to reach the thickest/lowest string.

So Jean, how long did it take you to become functional on those gigantic instruments? I look at them and I'm just flummoxed!

BTW, you should really consider my suggestion of calling it a "gigantar." It's a bass but it's got more notes in the upper range than the lower, and its gigantic.

Warmoth Deluxe Jazz 5, Dean B2-5, Ashbory, Fender Jazz Deluxe Active, Peavey Fury6, SX SJB62-5 (J-Retro modded), SX Short-scale Jazz, Short-scale Fullerton Cutlass MM, White Jazz Funk Machine (homebuilt, Audere-equipped) and my custom 6 (currently stalled out)...

I lost count. But here's a new picture of some of them.

I guess that "re-stringing" for you is much like painting the Golden Gate bridge? There's a full-time team of technicians locked in your basement, who come out out night and start changing the strings :smug: .

Don't you ever wake up and think to yourself, "Hmm, I think I'll switch to flats today"? :D

BTW, I checked out some of your videos today, for the first time. You're rather good aren't you?

Respect!

Check my profile for all 4 that I have. I just picked up a Fender MIM Jazz RW/Sunburst to keep at work 100% so I can practice during my lunch break. So if something happens to it, who cares? Although, it is very good quality all-around for an MIM. I'm surprised. All gear was 20% off at Sam Ash today (Memorial Day) - so I got about $98 off the price...not too bad!

I have 10 right now (including my double bass).
