How many crossover between multiple cabs?

Hypothetically speaking, you are playing through a 4x10 and a 2x15 (maybe isobaric, dunno yet), would you set a crossover point inbetween the two cabs or would you not let them share frequencies?
If you're going to go active and cross the cabs, them a 4x10 is a waste of time. You won't need the cone area and you'll have the poor horizontal response of the 10's placed laterally. Isobaric is also a waste of time in a high output pro cab. Extra weight, heat and power consumption for a bit of extra LF that probably won't be a lot of use on stage in most venues.

Are you starting from scratch and designing the cabs or just intending to use what you have? If the former, design it as a system, and if the latter, I'd probably still cross them electronically and would experiment in the circa 150Hz region. However, you may prefer the sound of both cabs run together full range so try both and see what you prefer.

I'd say: Trust Your ears.

It depends on how the two cabs behave near the transition frequency (whatever You choose) and the amount overlapping should be controllable also ie. the order of the crossover.

I've tried crossing between my WM4x10 and a Bill Fitzmaurice Tuba 48 and I just could NOT get them to be nice to each other. It might have been because of such varying sounds coming from each cab though. :rollno:

I already have a pretty basic 4x10. Nothing fancy. I aquired two 15" Eminence subs (model number 151315, still awaiting a response from Eminence on T/S parameters. I anticipate something very similary to a B15) and want to put them to use. I'm not completely utilizing my amplifier and want to try out some new things.

I would be starting from scratch on the 15" cab (unsure of how many drivers), but I'll be keeping the 4x10 the same for now. I don't really want to try crossing the two cabs due to my experiences in my past, because the cabs weren't designed to function in that way.

If it were recommended that I did crossover, I was going to manipulated the plans for the new enclosure to that recommendation. I'm probably going to end up going fullrange and seeing what happens. I'm just trying to get a general feel for what the majority does with multiple cabs.

Like A9X stated above, the result might not be of Your liking ;)

IME using crossovers in instrument rigs is very tiring and time consuming experience as there's almost no way to test the projection and sound with an actual live signal vs. a test signal.

The PA stacks where active crossovers are frequently used, are different animals altogether. There's plenty of signals and samples to choose from when tweaking the best possible combination of frequencies and other parameters. That too can take a huge amount of time if the different cabs in the stack are not fully compatible. As they usually are not, so delays have to be used to move all the speakers to the same acoustic plane. PITA I tell You :spit: .

My approach with our PA is to use EQs as filters for both the mains and the subs and "draw" the crossover curves. NOT the best solution, but quite fast with a familiar test tone and gives satisfactory results.

Fullrange for the moment at least then. I wish I had some sort of idea of the FR of my WM cab. I really hate designing blind. Besides, I'm not getting the projected low end response out of the 15" I was hoping for. But who knows? It might be lightyears more than what I have now. I just wish I knew somehow. :confused:

But oddly, isobaric seems to yield a much more tolerable curve. BOGGLE
