Double Bass How many double basses do you own ?

I only have one bass as well. Took me 4 years to save up for. It’s nothing special, nothing crazy expensive or rare, but it gets the job done. It’s a 2007 plywood Upton Hawkes.

Nothing special, says the guy w/ the dots and the solo extension... ;)

I'm often surprised at how nice the wood in certain ply basses - such as yours - can appear. The other day my Engle was catching the sun, and I noticed some flaming on the top that I had never noticed before. I've long thought the ribs striking. Just because a bass is cheap, it doesn't have to LOOK cheap! :D

Three!

1942 Kay M-1
1955 Kay M-1B
Shen SB-90

I’ve only recently gotten my first old Kay after decades of playing. They are very addictive and the Shen is a great bass for taking any gig abuse that I wouldn’t want to subject one of my elderly Basses to. I have a thing for blondes and room for a few more so the hunt is on.

My first bass is a 3/4 flatback made personally by Gunter Kramer (Pollman) for Wil de Sola in 1992. The timbers are Canadian spruce and American broadleaf maple. Wil designed the outline which Gunter made work. According to Wil there were 32 basses made to this outline, mostly swell backs. Will kept three, 2 flat backs and one swell back. The dropped shoulders are compensated by deeper ribs to give enough enclosed volume for depth of sound. I wanted to finish my career on the best smaller bass I could find and this fits the bill.

The other bass pictured is thought to be a Xavier Jacquet late 19th century spruce and maple bass. The timbers are fairly plain and the original fingerboard was rosewood that has me thinking that this is not one of their highest quality basses. When I bought it quite cheaply it had a fingerboard chart stuck to its fingerboard and the remains of old gut strings hanging from the peg box. Matthew Tucker and his crew recently did a very good job of putting the bass back into good order, revealing its original varnish under a load of dirt. It is a 7/8 with a longer mensure and body than my 1 2 3 4 and 5' 7" height are comfortable with so I plan to pass it on
