How many gated fuzzes out there?

Hello all! I am just now getting into effects and my first bass pedal that I'm getting is a ZVEX Wooly Mammoth (good choice or bad choice for a first pedal?) and it should be arriving very soon, but I have one question I thought I would ask it in this thread instead of creating a new one because it is about gated fuzz pedals.

Its a quite simple question.

I would like somone to define the term "gated fuzz" in a manner than it can be understood by somone who knows not a whole lot about pedals in general.

Brown Dog was my all time favorite fuzz. Extremely articulate thanks to it's wide gate range. And has a separate clean out you can use to trigger filters, though the fuzz output with a tight gate is so articulate you usually don't need to use that feature.

The Zvex Mastotron can sound pretty gated and/or sputtery, depending on how you control the width and push controls.
