how many watts do you think they use?

In the club I do sound for, its max capicity is about 1500. Wattage on FOH is 20840.
We have 2 macro tech 1200's for highs, 4 2402's for mids, and 4 3600's for lows.
So, I would guess on your question, some where between 20K watts, to 50K watts, depending on what speakers are being used.
A typical fesitval rig I run, during the summer has I techs, 2 4K's, 6 6K's and 4 8K's for a total of about 76 K watt. That will do 5K peeps just fine.

Yeah, it is. These days amps have become very effient and big. About a year or so ago, we had a tour come in, that wanted a sub augment. We brought in 12 JBL SRX700 subs, and 6 ITech 8K's for a total of 48K watt on subs. People were litterally getting sick. Fun times

What band?
GWAR was the headliner, it was called "sounds of the under ground tour". 13 bands IIRC. Went pretty smooth considering.
I've played through the L-Acoustics Kudo system three times (including monitors). It was around 100+k. They were good gigs!
I don't actually know how big the rig was. There were 12-15 flown speakers per side with 9-12 subs across the front (BIG subs) and about 6-8 wedges plus sidefill. The sound was cater for an audience of 10,000 - 15,000 people (respectively) at a couple of festivals.
Just count the number of cabinets in use...running a kilowatt or more per cab (even monitors) is not out of the question these days as watts are so cheap. The $1 per watt rule of the 1970s was broken a long time ago
