How much mac power?

I'm mulling over buying a used Mac of some sort principally for live use. I'll be using 2 or 3 instances of augustus loop or sooper looper, 2 or 3 modestly resource hungry VSTs, 1 or 2 soft synths, a sequencer for drums and beats and a sampler, hosted possibly in Audiomulch or Ableton Live. Any advice would be extremely appreciated

well at least a G4 a G5 would be even better. probably a gig or more of ram, and as a big a hard drive as your heart desires. O for live use? so a laptop? get a used G4 Powerbook 15" with a gig of ram and the fastest processor you can find. should serve you well enough. or if youre a student buy the lowest level macbook pro or the highest level macbook. then buy a real good case for it. not your run of the mill stuff, something heavy duty.

Hi Philipc,

A G4 or G5 of recent years should work quite well for you. Having at least 1 GB of RAM will really help with the soft synths.

Be aware that you if get a used Intel based Mac, that not all applications are running on it yet. Things like LIVE, and Reason are, along with Pro Tools and others. Digital Performer just came out with a new version last week to make it compatible. You can see a long list of companies, not just Music Technology companies, that are up and running, or are working on support for the Intel based Mac computers here.

The dual core Intel CPUs will beat the pants off any G4 based laptop so if the software you want has come out in universal binary form then get a new Intel based laptop.
