Hi,
I've been asked to join a band and do some recording. There are two songwriters already, so they're recruiting me to play the bass for gigs and to record. I wouldn't have creative input.
I haven't met with the two guys yet, but I want to discuss how I would be compensated for time spent recording. Gigs, I'm assuming, would pay.
I don't think these guys have a lot of money. One of them is working part-time. The other I don't know anything about. So I was considering asking for royalties on the recordings. Of course, who knows if this project will go anywhere? However, what royalty rate do you think I should charge?
In my last band I created and recorded the bass part for a song, [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] that we recorded and I contributed a few lines of lyrics. The guy who wrote the music and most of the lyrics gave me and the vocalist each 33% of the royalties. So far I've only received about 25 cents, but I think it's pretty cool that he's generous with the royalty rate.
I don't expect that much of a royalty rate for this new project, but I'm thinking somewhere between 10% & 20%. What do you think?
